Our results suggest a mechanism for how Durusdinium association enhances thermotolerance yet predisposes corals to tissue damage under stress, suggesting immune trade-offs that can compromise host survival under multiple stressors.

Sarah W. Davies Ph.D. @daviesswphd.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Lastly, because our sample size was low, we wanted to confirm that the patterns we observed were consistent in other studies. We found that regardless of species and life stage- D-hosting corals consistently exhibited this enriched immune signal.
110
Sarah W. Davies Ph.D. @daviesswphd.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Next, to test whether the constitutively higher immune signature observed in D-hosting corals led to reduced susceptibility to pathogens, JK performed a pathogen challenge experiment and found that it did not, D-hosting corals died quicker!

Sarah W. Davies Ph.D. @daviesswphd.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
We profiled the microbiome in response to heat challenge and while there was some response to both coral genotype and heat challenge, there was no clear signal here.
110
Sarah W. Davies Ph.D. @daviesswphd.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
These gene expression data also showed that heat stress and symbiosis-related gene expression varied under heat challenge and by algal type, with D-hosting corals showing greater expression under heat challenge.
130
Sarah W. Davies Ph.D. @daviesswphd.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Next we profiled the gene expression after heat challenge and did a Weighted Gene Correlation Network Analysis (WGCNA) that revealed a module of genes enriched for immune and stress response pathways associated with heat treatment and several physiological traits.

Sarah W. Davies Ph.D. @daviesswphd.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Next, in my BUMP course students performed a thermal challenge assay and discovered that D-hosting corals were not as susceptible to bleaching as C-hosting corals; however, they started sloughing their tissue instead! This was a very exciting result that was repeated over several experiments.

First, we profiled GE patterns of Cladocopium- and Durusdinium-hosting corals and found that genes associated with immunity (including NFkB!) were upregulated in D-hosting corals. This pattern was confirmed via western blotting.
