It's the beginning of blackberry season where I live. Remember to give the first berry to the faeries and land spirits. After that, you can eat all you want! #berries #wildcrafting #foraging
A cluster of bright red unripe blackberries hanging on the vine, with a single glossy black ripe blackberry hanging among them. The berries are surrounded by bright green leaves, with one small cluster of yellowing leaves just above them.

#FolkloreThursday The Mari Lwyd is out and about this time in Wales. The tradition had all but died out until recent revivals have put it back front and centre in the Welsh Christmas calendar. Going house to house in Welsh villages, knocking on doors, rap-battling for booze... Pure Xmas! #marilwyd

"Blodeuwedd" Oil Paints In Welsh mythology, she was conjured from broom, meadowsweet, & oak blossoms by magicians, as a bride for Lleu Llaw Gyffes. I wanted to depict a being caught between the wild magic of her floral origins & the solidness of her human form #oilpaint #art #welshart #mabinogion

“Thinking About You Fondly” Pencils The starting point was an antique CDV portrait that I developed in a sketchbook piece. I’m undecided if she’s creating a being with her hair, or dismantling him. Either way, for me, it’s a piece steeped in desire, longing and resignation. #art #pencilart #wales

The Mari Morgen are mischievous water spirits from Welsh & Breton folklore. They could be both alluring and deadly, and likened to mermaids without tails. Their ability to manipulate water would often see them blamed for floods and heavy rain. #FolkloreThursday - Art: Mari Morgen Startles A Heron

The most enigmatic Welsh monster is the gwyllion (the "twilight wanderer"). Some say it's a fairy hag who leads travelers astray, others say that it's a ghost or a wandering lunatic. Merlin learned prophecy from gwyllions he met as he himself wandered insane in the forest. #WyrdWednesday

The unusual burial chamber at Lligwy, #Anglesey, was once the HQ of a #witch. Thrown off a ship for some mischief or other, a fisherman rescued her and she asked him to take her to the cromlech. There she gave him a charm made of snakeskin which brought him good luck all his life. #FolkloreThursday

#FolkloreThursday Crows have a long history of association with witches, both as familiars or essential to spell casting. It was believed they could fly between this & the spirit world, cementing the relationship with the witchy kind. Inspired by that association I made this artwork, Madam Bird #art

Thinking about I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone again
I was trying to describe you to someone a few days ago. You don't look like any girl I've ever seen before.

I couldn't say: "Well, she looks just like Jane Fonda except that she's got red hair and her mouth is different and of course she's not a movie star."

I couldn't say that because you don't look like Jane Fonda at all.

I finally ended up describing you as a movie I saw when I was a child in Tacoma, Washington. I guess I saw it in 1941 or '42: somewhere in there. I think I was seven or eight or six. It was a movie about rural electrification and a perfect 1930s New Deal morality kind of movie to show kids.

The movie was about farmers living in the country without electricity. They had to use lanterns to see by at night, for sewing and reading, and they didn't have any appliances, like toasters or washing machines, and they couldn't listen to the radio.

Then they built a dam with big electric generators and they put poles across the countryside and strung wire over fields and pastures.

There was an incredible heroic dimension that came from the simple putting up of poles for the wires to travel along. They looked ancient and modern at the same time.

Then the movie showed Electricity like a young Greek god coming to the farmer to take away forever the dark ways of his life.

Suddenly, religiously, with the throwing of a switch the farmer had electric lights to see by when he milked his cows in the early black winter mornings.

The farmer's family got to listen to the radio and have a toaster and lots of bright lights to sew dresses and read the newspaper by.

It was really a fantastic movie and excited me like listening to "The Star-Spangled Banner" or seeing photo-graphs of President Roosevelt or hearing him on the radio.

The President of the United States "

I wanted electricity to go everywhere in the world. I wanted all the farmers in the world to be able to listen to President Roosevelt on the radio.

That's how you look to me.

Fresh up for the weather themed #FolkloreThursday today I offer the #Witches of Boscastle who captured favourable wind in knots. These ropes were then sold to sailors to help get them moving when their ships were becalmed. Superstition? Maybe. But a fascinating slice of Cornish #WitchSky for sure.
A painting by Vivienne Shanley of an old Cornish witch selling sailors a knotted rope full of favourable winds. They stand on the stones of Boscastle harbour with the curl of the sea cliffs in the background. A cat and a seagull play in the foreground, a younger looking witch captures the wind behind them all while a young man watches. The text is on white banners over the main image.

Our cat keeps bringing us dead mice as gifts. Well, I assume they are gifts. I thank her, give her one of the treats she loves and then peg the dead mouse to the garden washing line by its tail. A crow or raven comes and takes it away before the end of the day. We are all a team.
