abolish DFCS and all forms of policing. this is not the answer to any social problems (and it doesn't prevent child abuse)

There’s something to be said for how most of the political spectrum can unite around hounding some lesbians over niche drama in their spaces but huge segments of society are silent about pervasive campus rape impacting a huge population of primarily youngwomen

NHJ's daughter says kids at her new high school are no smarter than at her old school, plus she's facing racism for the first time. But white readers take away that privileged Black families should send their kids to superior white schools and maybe apologize for trying to help maj Black schools.

ICE cannot do what it’s doing without local law enforcement. They need their manpower and infrastructure. That means if you want to stop ICE you are going to have to confront police collaboration and police power. I’m sorry but progressive hopes of avoiding this conflict are a recipe for failure.

One of the basic points in Mills' The Racial Contract (originally published in 1997!) was that, if nothing else, White Supremacy deserves to be taken seriously as one of the great motivating ideologies of modernity and it's bizarre that political philosophers are so disinclined to treat it as such.

I’ve seen some good critiques of the recent Hannah-Jones piece, but which don’t seem to focus on NHJ’s claims. Some responses interpret NHJ’s choices as a theory of change, which feels like a misread. I interpret her choice to disengage from school choice as a kind of harm reduction.

I really appreciate how this thread prods us to look closely at the NHJ piece! I didn’t interpret NHJ as saying that proximity would address systemic gaps. Her thesis seemed different to me (though now I’m thinking about a reread). Thread definitely worth a read!

STEM course materials about 85 percent costlier than humanities, arts textbooks
Students enrolled in STEM courses pay about $45 more for books than those in non-STEM courses, a Hatchet analysis found.

One of the more insidious phrasings I've seen with the Dems/trans rights discourse lately is the idea that trans people are being greedy and demanding a "maximalist" approach to trans rights. No, you cannot call the state of rights American trans people had as recently as 2023 "maximalist," sorry.

“So in summary: using AI for coding led to depression, apathy, existential dread, and worse software. Not good.” Appreciate the honesty in this piece. What’s also striking is how much this experience matches the kind of alienation that workers have experienced under capitalism.

Capital flight is both regional and international. It’s harmful to workers when it doesn’t cross an international border. But international borders are also integral to how many industries manage the labor process. It’s all connected.

The far-reaching order does not include a moratorium on data center development. However, it requires local approval to receive state permits, which in effect may block many from moving forward.

A lot of arguing in here about whether there was austerity following 2007/8 crash and whether Obama was responsible. The U.S. absolutely went into austerity & it’s because states were forced to make massive cuts to their budgets. Was Obama responsible?

A quick reminder whenever the issue of hiring in higher education comes up. Assistant Professor is an entry level position. If you have a phd in the specialization(s) in the call then you are qualified to begin the work. PPL easily forget this because it’s highly credentialed and very competitive.

In the modern job market it’s not uncommon to have job searches that produce dozens of qualified candidates and several who are tenurable on the publications they’ve placed before even finishing their PhD. It’s all but impossible to create an “objective” process to select among them.
