The right anterior insula stood out as a key point of convergence - found in both the baseline & longitudinal integration analyses. The most improved patients with #FND started with right anterior insula integration that was higher than HCs, which then normalized at follow-up.

Longitudinally, as individuals improved, the connectivity in many of these same regions/networks (VAN, FPN, DMN) decreased. Shown below are the longitudinal post-treatment vs. baseline rsFC profiles appreciated in the between-network integration analyses.

At baseline, brain rs-fMRI features were associated with 6-month improvement: greater centrality (middle frontal & precentral gyri, cerebellum), greater between-network connectivity (ventral attention, frontoparietal (FPN), default mode network regions), & greater within-network connectivity (FPN).

Instead of looking at individual brain connections, we used three graph-theory measures of large-scale brain resting-state functional network organization:

We followed 32 adults with FND over ~6.8 months while they received individualized, naturalistic txt. Trajectories varied widely: 59.4% improved, 31.3% unchanged, and 9.3% worsened. There was no group-level change in symptom scores - the variability was at the individual level.
