Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

I was deputy M.E. at the WSJ when Murdoch took over, with a similar “editorial independence board.” Within 4 months, our top editor was gone, replaced by a loyal Murdoch deputy. That board raised a quivering objection, but the deed was done. If the Ellisons own CNN, they’ll do whatever they want.

Thompson's brilliant "Who Goes Nazi?" piece is a prescient, perfect way to understand the cowardice of the Trump era - especially the complicity of the media. @LeahFlanagan wrote this excellent updated version in 2017. Today the situation is far worse. theoutline.com/post/1453/wh...

There's no doubt that Putin fears the return of his army home. That is why he is so afraid of the war ending without victory. And there will be no victory. He is physically afraid of his own army. That is why, if there is no ceasefire backed by specific security guarantees, he will return to war. And this time, others may be the ones under attack.
Today, Ukraine is de facto the second army of
NATO - one that is not inferior to the second army in the world. And that is why NATO needs us - specifically us - de jure. This is already a fact recognized by all leaders. Putin will remain in the Kremlin until his death, and he has one goal: the restoration of the Soviet Union.
Without Ukraine, this is impossible, and thr= why things are so difficult for us.

Treat lies like obscenities.
Kate Cohen
Former Post contributing columnist
My dream new journalistic standard would make it unacceptable to quote a lie in a news story. In the deep-fake, bot-infested Trump era, it’s no longer enough for news organizations to seek truth; we need them to protect the public from lies. Lies should be treated like obscenities, graphic violence or sexual content. That means literally refusing to repeat a transparent lie — not quoting it early and then offering corrective facts two paragraphs or 30 seconds later. Sure, sometimes it’s a judgment call whether a statement falls just to the spin side of the mendacity line. But sometimes it’s obvious. You know how news stories avoid quoting profanity by saying things like “he said, adding an expletive for emphasis”? That’s how reporters should deal with lies: e.g., “he said, before repeatedly lying about …” As for lying on live TV? Bring on the bleeps!

Special Citations and Awards
X
Julie K. Brown
A special citation is awarded to Miami Herald reporter Julie K. Brown for her groundbreaking reporting in 2017 and 2018 that exposed Jeffrey Epstein's systematic abuse of young women, the justice system that protected him, and, over time, his powerful network of associates and enablers.
Her Perversion of Justice series, published nearly a decade ago, revealed how prosecutors shielded Epstein from federal sex trafficking charges when he was first accused of abusing young women. She went on to document and give voice to the scores of victims who had been groomed and abused by him and others in his circle. Her work, and the release of the government's Epstein files, continue to reverberate around the world.

New York Times: If you're gonna crib our headline, you could at least credit Nick Judin and the Mississippi Free Press for first reporting it 2 days earlier. I'm glad this story is getting national attention. But Nick puts a lot of himself in these stories, and deserves credit (just as we'd do).
Mississippi Free Press screenshot shows a picture of two teen boys with their arms around one another in front of a cake and a sign that says "2026." The headline below the photo says: Max and Israel Makoka Were Waiting for a Hancock High School Bus. ICE Took the Brothers Instead.

The shooting happened on the level above the ballroom where the White House Correspondents Association dinner was.
I don't think people hearing about this -- or even those of us in the room -- realized how far from the president, VP and other guests this incident was. It was on another floor, up some stairs and several sets of security away.
Because the Washington Hilton's hotel and other public spaces were open for other functions, the entire building wasn't secured by the Secret Service, just the specific areas where the WHCA dinner was held, law enforcement officials told @CBSNews
