Deep into lockdown I got out of a post-working in music industry, multi-year issue of not meaningfully engaging with music by diving deep into Japanese indie rock of 90s-10s & what broke the rut was Kinoko Teikoku’s Long Goodbye which miraculously was just pressed for the 1st time by their old label
A hand holding a sealed LP of the Kinoko Teikoku EP Long Goodbye in front of a book shelf. The cover is a deep blue background with a pattern of small flowers with white pedal and yellow centers

Want to feel excited about the future? Go talk to DJs at a college radio station & listen to the joy they have about music and building community. I feel lucky to do it often via @spinitron.bsky.social but now also wrote about it in a piece about WCSF's two student PDs noncommusic.org/stories/wcsf/

I’ve listened to a bunch of playlists trying to sort out what “indie sleaze” was and frankly I don’t think any of them match the zenith I hit with this playlist I made for a boudoir-themed Christmas party in December 2009

We seem to be losing so many wonderful minds lately, & I’m somewhat stuck on this one. Soraya wrote a hugely lasting piece of music writing for me, where she explores something I’ve often felt since I was a teen: that tedious friction of hating art everyone else loves. longreads.com/2020/05/04/i...
A screen grab from an piece called What Happens If I Don’t Like Fiona Apple? by Soraya Roberts: “After all of that, Wilson’s final words could have very well been all he had written: “[M]aybe you just find Fiona Apple a bit much.” The irony is that the same thing I critique her for — for being too solipsistic, for making it all too self-centered — is the same reason I can’t hear her straight. My reactions to art are as impulsive as my consumption is lonely. It’s why, ultimately, I can’t trust critics’ taste though I can trust their analysis, and why I can’t trust the artists themselves, only their art and my own experience of it. If you think about it, it’s a little crazy to believe in your gut when your gut is at least in part influenced by exposure: “acquired taste” is a thing for a reason. And yet I always seem hellbent on independently deciding on the quality of everything. If nothing else, I am entirely secure in my judgment, because, the thinking goes, I may not know much about anything else, but I know myself perfectly”

You ever hear a performance that makes you love and appreciate music that much more? One where you realize this is just as good as it gets? That the musicians just have found something perfect? Despite being 40+ minutes long, I have listened to this more than I can count youtu.be/U_5iALgdLYw?...

Always a pleasure to chat with a station outside the contiguous 48 and KKCR in Kaua’i was no different. “Community radio” means something different when you’re surrounded by water but the station & their volunteer DJs broadcast a lot further than the tiny island noncommusic.org/stories/kkcr/

watched Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters is a 1985 biographical drama film directed by Paul Schrader

Japanese author Yukio Mishima and his private militia took control of the Japan Self-Defense Forces base in Ichigaya. Mishima felt that a speech would be enough to convince the JSDF members to abolish Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution.

Sadly for Mishima, he declined to use a microphone so his speech was barely audible amongst the crowd (not helped by the presence of low-flying helicopters) and received jeers instead.

After the speech, Mishima would make himself faster by putting sword-holes in him.
