David @davidcschmitt.com · 12/10/2026The specific millenarian ideology that gets pushed makes this especially true, but hasn't that always been our relationship to nature and technology? 011
David @davidcschmitt.com · 29/09/2026Nevermind that they are in a ruthless competition with OpenAI, Meta, etc. Buying up compute suffocates current and potential competitors. 000
David @davidcschmitt.com · 29/09/2026What kills them is allocating these compute resources to training (that is, to competing on capability). Splitting the resources between enterprise, consumers, and internal use seems to be the challenge. Suring up supply of these resources would alleviate this tension, no? 100
David @davidcschmitt.com · 29/09/2026Given that these are the same resources everyone cannot get enough of, with massive lead times, etc. And given that Anthropic has perhaps the greatest demand, esp in the enterprise. These are the inputs that generate revenue. 100
David @davidcschmitt.com · 01/09/2026Generative AI is already incorporated into healthcare, finance, etc. There would be service outages. You are being intellectually lazy. 000

David @davidcschmitt.com · 26/07/2026Anyway I am sure that the COBOL shop I worked at will never actually get off CICS and COBOL, because they don't need a genius AI to rewrite their code. They need the basic bravery to introduce a new lang & whittle down the valuable core of the transactional code, call into it & write unit tests! 020
David @davidcschmitt.com · 26/07/2026Meanwhile the salesguy next to him just wanted to convince me that if our company used other AI models, even other open models, we would get sued. That's really sad because the engineer's pitch was about owning and understanding my tools. But their sales is all fear. Super disapointing. 120
David @davidcschmitt.com · 26/07/2026His basic thesis: the major model labs lie to consumers and obscure what the API does to make it seem like a raw model capability. The truth is actually, simple infrastructure + fine-tune for the use-case. This is healthy and creative skepticism. (and true, especially at that time) 120
David @davidcschmitt.com · 26/07/2026IBM is always on about post quantum and AI. But its all FUD to keep you on IBM infra. I actually met the creator of Mellea at a conf. Remarkably good primitives. Basically the opposite of langchain style bloat. 120
David @davidcschmitt.com · 26/07/2026Yet at the same time, the management still wants to feel that they are modernizing, so that's why you get layers of cruft. React interfaces that are painfully slow waterfalled CICS calls in the background. They were excited about the potential of AI in 2022 when it couldn't even reliably call tools. 110
