David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025I watched the first ep but struggled with how dark it was - literally and subject matter. Feel like I need to persevere tho. 100
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025Am on the east coast now and there are tons of (lovely and busy) caravan parks that are doing a roaring trade. 010
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025Yeah, there’s def some growth. We’d just need to massively increase land use by the sea. 110
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025Yep, but it’s “tiny”. And it doesn’t usually coincide with “has plenty of money and wants big splash parks and full of entertainment and all-inclusive food”. 100
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025Oh totally. But there’s, what, 7 Center Parcs? Some villages in a small Greek island will have that many - with 200+ rooms each. And buying the land on the beachfront for all that hotel would mean you’d have to charge a fortune. Land in rural Bedfordshire is much cheaper. 110
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025For the cost of a weekend there you can get flights and a week all-inclusive in Greece. 200
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025Also eg this 5* hotel with a pool is £500+ a night next weekend: 000
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025There are lots of campsites that are similar I guess. But the land needed is huge (even ignoring overcoming planning permission) and the economics of those places mean you need four v busy months to make them work and we cannot yet attract that many people. 300
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025It was a stop en route to Scotland. But yes, I don’t think the brisk wind and grey skies were the issue tho. 000
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025But we could no way afford to build and run the sort of all-inclusive 5*, water-park and activity-packed beachside hotels that are ten a penny in Spain / Turkey / Greece in any remotely accessible way. Try booking even a hotel with a pool on the English coast in August. 100
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 17/08/2025Went in late-January this year and it was thoroughly depressing. Tho decent fish and chips. 210
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 16/08/2025As someone who until recently worked in travel PR, what I find especially interesting is his stuff is very “non” travel content. And yet inspires travel possibly more so than ones of lovely looking beaches and sweeping panoramas. 030

David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025Isn’t it the worst. Have loved hate-watching every episode. 110
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025Yeah, I guess the test is if a toilet door with a woman sign on makes it a single sex space? 100
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025Same. Not a lawyer so is just my lay person reading of the ruling but it seems pretty explicit that biologically female as well as female-presenting (ie not trans men) are primary in the case of single sex spaces. 100
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025That’s the thing, if you “present” male you should use male loos. And then we start with the women who have shaved heads or a strong jaw or are tall and suddenly people start asking for birth certificates. 010
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025Yup. Also, quite a few in smaller places are just a sit down loo anyway so they’ll just take the signs off. 010
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025Well I *think* the Supreme Court’s ruling is the law? And the guidance is to help organisations interpret it? But it sounds like those found not adhering could be liable for a sex discrimination claim. The government could change the law, tho. 100

David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025The challenge for many who want to do that tho is how they do it *and* comply with the law. No doubt a lot of people will be finding test cases to sue for discrimination and to so many venues with loos eg it will become untenable. It’s such a mess of a ruling. 540
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025If your birth certificate is the route to accessing a loo anywhere in public good luck to us all finding them in our parents’ lofts. Or at all. I didn’t have needing ID to use the loo for 2025 but here we seem to be. 020
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 08/08/2025Sounds to me like the worst possible outcome from the Supreme Court ruling is about to transpire. Leaving aside the indignity for trans people, how is your local community centre, swimming baths, pub or restaurant going to police this to prevent bad faith actors suing them. 330
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 07/08/2025Admittedly I only watched with half an eye but it seemed deathly dull and v shouty. 100
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 06/08/2025Also, *everyone* who Googles (aka everyone) uses AI even if they don’t choose to. And so so so many people I see Googling now take the AI written explanation / answer as read. 000
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 06/08/2025Yep, even I got bored of (the limited) telly sometimes and did stuff. And then as a teen I could drink at 15 in bars and clubs and so was out having fun at weekends socialising in a way that I don’t think is possible anymore. 010

David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 03/08/2025Nope. I liked the show but found it a bit stressful to watch but that whole episode had me on the edge and I was like you know what I do not need to subject myself to this. And there was a lack of calm and colour for me to handle to stress and the gloom of most of it. 110
David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 03/08/2025I had to stop at the Christmas lunch episode. The anxiety was just too much for me to get through it. I needed it to have more joy (and maybe some sex). 100

David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 28/07/2025But also why must everything be pleasant? Sewage works aren’t joyful things but I’d still rather have them than not. Electricity substations aren’t winning Stirling prizes but we’d be effed without them. 1110

David Child @davidchild.bsky.social · 28/07/2025This is sort of part of it but I get irritated with (educated, should know better friends) who say things like “the BBC is bad” / “big government is bad”. If we make a big deal out of things not being exactly as we want and so we say it’s all bad then no wonder we chip away at faith in the “system”. 010
