Traumamuffin? Would I do that to a character? It couldn't be how Melody Fayth transitions from the Point-of-View in #CatsThePajamas to the mysterious badass in "Melody of". Certainly not something I'd have done to Horera. She's adorable. Huh. So mine are the ones who start kind and don't break.

I've got lots of those characters. Mathias and Chana spring to mind (because I'm editing the Rose Book now). He's more stoic, while she lets her anger shine bright. The best, or worst, example is Elanor. I spent a lot of time thinking about her and how to make her more than just a victim.

She would claim what she was owed. She would make every loathsome soul see the wages of their disdain. She would rip open the throat of this wretched world and watch paradise drown in its own blood.
Perhaps that, at least, would be enough.

“Behold, the most important room of the palace,” Tiferet announces, the fabric of her dress sparkling as she twirls in place. “Nowhere in Flaundrys will you find such a locus of staggering innovation and breathtaking beauty! The woman who resides here must surely be the envy of all Tron Daurat!”
Casimir glances, briefly, across the study, then rolls his eyes. “And that woman is you,” he drones.
Her arms drop, but a smirk still plays across her lips. “Oh, don’t spoil the fun.”

The death of an elf, once such a rare thing, still brings with it a small token of beauty. Perhaps it is one last unconscious act of creation performed just before the end, or perhaps it is merely the effect of the Ohr leaving their body. Whatever the cause, if the surroundings allow for it (even, at times, when they should not), a patch of mismatched flowers blooms at the site of their death.
Snowflakes fell in the town’s flower-choked streets, stark against the dark hues of dried blood and mangled remains, and Tiferet’s heart hardly stirred. It was a tragedy, yes; just like all the other tragedies that made up the last thirteen years.

The dark treeline behind the inn vomits a wave of horrors.
No two demons are anything alike. Some are hulking masses, some smaller than an elf. They crawl on teeth like fingers. They fly on feathers of skin. A tongue ends in a head, whose tongue ends in a head, whose tongue ends in a head. A face pockmarked with vacant holes stares at nothing. The tail of one wears the visage of a sleeping child.
And each is a vulgar, shrieking paroxysm of color.

Other than having no clue just how powerful she is, Melody has a fairly accurate perception of herself that she makes a point of maintaining. Though her modesty can obscure that to others. Cat's commitment to her performance of her greatness is a significant factor in how accurate it ends up being.

“Killing the dragon severed [redacted]. Once I was sure that Sylivyth was dead, I escaped through the sewer tunnels and came back to the inn. At that point, I imagine I lost consciousness. So, questions?”
There was a long moment of silence.
“Dragon blood is red?” Av’ry asked at last.
“Really? That is the best question you could think of?” Fox replied, exasperated.
“There is so much to ask! I panicked,” he replied ruefully.

Slipping inside, T’orrin closed the door quietly behind him. And turned around to find two men in guard uniforms watching him intently. Perhaps he was wrong about his luck.
“Well, well, well,” the first man stepped forward, “we were told to watch for people sneaking out of the city, not in. But this works just as well.”
“I have no idea what you are talking about,” T’orrin stammered. “We are just cutting through our friends’ house, on our way back from hunting in the woods. We do it all the time. Just ask them.”
“Hunting, eh?” The second man sneered. “Where is your game, then?”
“Not my lucky day.”
“And your weapons?”
“Left them in the woods.”
“And her shoes?” He nodded towards the woman’s bare, bleeding feet.
T’orrin hesitated. He didn’t have an answer for that one. It didn’t really matter anyway, because it was obvious that they weren’t buying his story.
The first guard stepped closer and pushed back the woman’s hood.

#Septopolis I touched on this yesterday with the structure of governance, and while many human facing agencies have a relatively normal human manning the helm, when it comes to the police, it's faceless and inhuman brutality all the way down.
