Opinion: Doug Ford's plan to spend $48 million ripping up Toronto bike lanes has attracted some naysayers. One East York resident texted the premier's cellphone to tell him about his close friend who died in a cycling accident and asked him to reconsider. The response he received included "lmao."

I'm reminded of this Zach Lieberman tweet about the "grain" of code: twitter.com/zachlieberma... I wonder if AI code has a different grain than manual code? if so one should at least be aware that there are other ways of doing things with different results so you can weigh your choice of tools

paper is awesome - I love prints, I studied printmaking, love plotter art, etc.... but I feel what's fascinating here is finding the "grain" of computational art -- what do the code, algorithms and systems feel like. I think trying too hard to be like paper clouds that.

some are affected by AI: a system still needs the same level of thought and care for it to retain the same impact as before; the unknown terrain needs more injected perspective to keep it interesting on top of an ever higher noise floor of AI; you can achieve aesthetic goals via other means.

Dave Pagurek @davepagurek.com · 27/09/2026
more thoughts on code art categories: sometimes a system is carefully constructed and crafted and seeing its effects are the "point"; other times it feels more like the artist is documenting an unknown terrain that they found; other times the code is just the means to get to some aesthetic output.

Um Toronto has many quiet, welcoming streets for a bike network trust me I’m an urban planner
Jokey map of possible residential side street alternatives to the Yonge Street bike lane from Bloor to St Clair.

The main streets are Avenue Road, Yonge Street, Mt Pleasant road.

The shops and restaurants are on Yonge.

The possible side street is an impossible windy path that involves tossing your bike over a gated cemetery and criss-crossing Yonge several times

when folks say that manual procedural generation work is not the same as generative AI, this is what we mean. it's all just humans making artistic decisions, even if it is generated. it's more often than not a highly manual process as detail oriented as when i'm manually making environments.
