here's this week's #Paleostream flocking results! this week we drew Epidexipteryx (mine is a juvenile being chased by a Pterorhynchus), Witwatia, Ceratosuchus (the bird behind it is Diatryma), and Prognathodon (mine has caught a young Archelon)
illuminated by an artifical light from below, a juvenile Epidexipteryx makes a daring jump from the tree branch it was resting on to avoid becoming a Pterorhynchus' midnight snack, it uses the membranes that run between its shoulder, across all its fingers, and ending at its elbow to somewhat control its descent, but mainly to cut the impact force from the fall

Epidexipteryx is an odd dinosaur from Jurassic Inner Mongolia, China with elongated fingers that may have held membranous webbing between them. there are many debates about whether or not it had these structures, but here i have chosen to depict them being used similarly to a flying frog's webbing (although not as effective) to essentially break the animals fall and allow it to somewhat control its descent rather than fully glide. there is also debate surrounding where the membrane of its relatives starts and stops, here i interpret that the largest portion was between its elbow and third finger rather than its third finger and its body

Pterorhynchus is a pterosaur from the same area, it had a long tail as well as an attachment point for a large soft tissue crest from the middle of its snout to the back of its headin a cave illuminated by an artificial light, a Witwatia flies away from the camera. above it are the rest of its colony staring back at the camera

Witwatia is an extinct kind of bat from Eocene Al Fayyum, Egypt only known from teeth, however, from the size and morphology of the teeth we can tell it was a large bat and most likely had similar morphology to extant vesper batsin the morning, a Diatryma walks carefully around a drying mudflat looking for food. it does not notice the Ceratosuchus lying in wait in one of the last saturated areas of the mud, its two large horns protruding just behind its exposed eye

Ceratosuchus is an extinct alligator from Paleocene Colorado, USA to Eocene Wyoming, USA which possessed distinctive large horns behind its eyes which protruded upwards almost appearing like cat ears

Diatryma is a genus of large hebivorous birds (often mixed up with terrorbirds, though they are closer related to waterfowl) which has typically been considered synonymous Gastornis, however, this has been debated in recent literature, here i choose to interpret it as a valid taxon though none of its diagnostic features are pictureda Prognathodon has caught hold of a young Archelon. it crunches down while continuing to swim up due to the inertia from a ventral ambush mere seconds before. the turtle's guts spill out as its shell is slowly crunched under the strong bite of the mosasaur

Prognathodon is a genus of large mosasaur from the late Cretaceous near-worldwide with a robust jaw that most species used to crush a large variety of prey. however, it should be noted that Prognathodon has a lot of species within it that may not actually be the direct relatives of the type species P. solvayi, with many not clading together in phylogenetic analyses. here i have depicted it with typical countershading, however, interupted by a metallic yellow strip of scales, the reflectiveness is based on the structure of the fossilised scales from Mosasaurus sevciki, though, colour isnt preserved

Archelon is the largest turtle found so far which lived in the Late Cretaceous Pierre Shale in Canada and the USA

Remarkable. Report of a Brazilian spiny-rayed fish dating to the Barremian stage of the Early Cretaceous, preceding the oldest known acanthomorphs by ~20 million years. Gondwanacanthus extends the roots of one of today's most prominent vertebrate radiations: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

An interesting anatomical quirk of nanotyrannus I haven't seen get talked about is that all the lethaeus and lancencis specimens that preserve the premaxilla have a tooth line that would have caused the less- recurved "incisiform" teeth to project slightly forward, even slightly past the premaxilla.

Here's a T. Rex bored to death trying to bite their own tail. My partner asked me to animate it in stop motion, after she watched a video about the very important topic of "could T. Rex chew its own tail like a dog". The puppet is still a work in progress 🦖

Moa
Digital Drawing. A depiction of all 9 species of moa. They look as if they are floating in the air, moving towards a glowing point in the bottom left corner. In the background are some twisty-ish trees, all leaning to the left. There is a dark border around the whole piece. At the bottom are the skulls of all 9 species (they're probably not exactly to scale with one another). On the left and right of the skulls are pairs of kōwhai leaves. The rest of the border is filled with simple lines.
All 9 species of moa are (left to right):
Mantell's moa
Bush moa
Eastern moa (bald one with blue head)
Heavy-footed moa (behind eastern moa)
South Island giant moa (has blue on the neck)
Stout-legged moa
North island giant moa
Crested moa
Upland moa

Entangled
Digital Drawing. A fish (Aspidorhynchus) has pierced the wing membrane of a pterosaur (Rhamphorhynchus) with its rostrum. Both have become stuck and are unable to free themselves as they descend together. The movement creates a trail of bubbles.

The scene is based on the multiple fossils that preserve the two animals entangled with one another.

#Xenovenator is one of the first named dinosaurs of the year! Assigned by Rivera-Sylva et al (2026) to the troodontid lineage, it has oddly thickened frontals - creating a bulbous/domed forehead. Could this be a combat or display adaptation? It's remains from Coahuila, #Mexico date back ~73m years.
