no offence but why is the British public being asked about my medical diagnosis, would it also like to check out my ankles and my elbows to decide whether I really have hypermobile joints, should I cough on them next time I have a cold so they can confirm that I'm ill

So the BAYEUX TAPESTRY was fascinating, although there’s a lot to take in and not much time to do it in. Thankfully had a quiet session so managed to see it at a decent pace once I’d avoided the dawdlers. Some magnificent merch too.

In other news, I’m sat in a café in Dublin where they’re playing The Smiths and The Sundays, the sun is shining, I’m going to a gig tonight, and I’m already mildly narked that I have to go home tomorrow.

I’ve just seen “iconic” and “shuttered” used in the same sentence, and am surprised they never added “beloved” to get a very special hat trick of worn-out 2020s news clichés.

Thanks to @boakandbailey.bsky.social for mentioning Bill Aherne’s, the Dublin pub that serves its Guinness through a 1960s tap box without being chilled - it takes a few minutes to pour, but it’s lovely! publichousehistory.substack.com/p/the-modern...

I'm in Dublin for the first time in years and years, which is exciting. And I'm staying in a Wetherspoons hotel, which is actually really, really nice (you get free unlimited tea/coffee from the pub machines if that's your thing)

Some lovely touches here. I bet someone at Lidl had fun designing this place. And this place is full of people roaring with laughter. Good job.

I've seen a comment elsewhere that there were flooding issues there so it might not work as a bar! Shame, with metre-thick walls it could work as a good club!

On the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street (in which Jewish, left-wing and trades union activists battled police to block a fascist march), here's the mural unveiled in 1983 designed by Dave Binnington on the former St George's Town Hall to commemorate the event.
The work is inspired by the social realism of Diego Rivera, and the likely was influenced by the Depression-era murals of Philip Guston. Using a fisheye perspective, it shows the violent confrontation between police and protesters, with protest banners, punches being thrown, a barricade of furniture and overturned vehicle, police horse, Hitler (who was not actually present) being pantsed, and a police autogyro overhead. It uses the same artistic devices as Goya's The Third of May 1808 to evince sympathy for the protesters, showing them full face but a back view of the police
