I don't think I've ever been in that kind of natural disaster before. Not gonna lie: I was shaken up for the rest of the week by the experience. And I was lucky to have an intact home to head back to, with the utilities still working, and enough gas in the car's tank to get there.

I found out later that overturned semi trucks had blocked the southbound lanes north of there, and the northbound lanes south of there. But the drive home was uneventful because the fast-moving storm was already several hours to the east by then.

I finally found an intersection with some open restaurants. I had lunch around 4pm at a brewpub. They were overrun with customers and apparently short-staffed as well. The food was good, and I was grouchy, but I left a decent tip. I took I-65 back to Indianapolis and home.

All along the way, there were mature trees broken or uprooted. Lots of debris of all kinds in the road. With all the traffic lights out and the roads full of upset drivers, the streets were chaotic. There were long lines around the few gas stations still open.

The traffic lights were all out along US 30 to Merrillville. Some of them were damaged, and one was laying in the street. Street signs had been torn off of overhead wires. Buildings were damaged, some by falling trees and others just by the wind, apparently. Advertising signs had been blown over.

I didn't find any open restaurants in Valparaiso, either. The Meijer was open, on emergency power - even the cash registers - but the employees were piling the frozen and refrigerated food into carts, presumably to move it all into some colder storage area. I headed west again.

I watched a big pickup truck and an SUV that decided to drive around the stalled car and through the high water. I thought that very unwise, but they made it. I turned around and took another road.

Unfortunately that highway was blocked by high water at a railroad overpass. There was a car already stalled from trying to drive through it. It's easier than you think to drive into high water without realizing it until it's too late and your engine sucks up water and never runs again.

I hadn't had lunch before my meeting, so I drove around Westville looking for an open restaurant. The electricity was off basically everywhere. So I headed toward Valparaiso, about 10 miles southwest. I saw downed trees everywhere. My map app told me to take a particular state highway.

I was in Northern Indiana on August 11, 2026 when the derecho went through. I was in Westville for a midday meeting. That's about 30 miles east of Gary. The storm uprooted a big oak tree right outside the building I was in. Fallen trees took down power lines and blocked roads all over town.

The bank called me Monday morning to apologize. The new ATM wasn’t really up and running. They’d had it set up for a demonstration and forgot to lock the kiosk door when they were done. They put the money back in my account, or maybe it never actually got taken out; I forget which.

My father told me that his grandfather told him there used to be a motorcycle race from Indianapolis to Terre Haute, and crowds would gather in Reelsville (near that stretch of U.S. 40) to see the riders wipe out on the downhill grade to Big Walnut Creek.
