Donovan with his daughter-in-law, the former Mary Grandin, and Captain James J. Angleton leaving the Vatican in 1945 after an audience with Pope Pius XII. The subject of Donovan's meeting with the Pope was among the most intriguing of his ca-reer. In 1944 the OSS, which Donovan then commanded, had developed a most secret intelligence source who claimed to have access to the documentation of the Pope's inner cabinet. This information appeared to be of great value, especially concerning Germany, Russia, and Japan, and was distributed in Washington only to FDR and his Cabinet under the code name Source Vessel. How-ever, in an investigation conducted by Captain Angleton it was found that the intelligence was forged and fabricated.
