Our study departs from this literature with several important advances: (1) we look at multiple diseases; (2) we look at all outbreaks, not just the first; (3) we test for causation, rather than assign based on subjective expert opinion; (4) we use a hypothesis-guided statistical model, not ML.

A question for the #RStats and #ggplot2 hivemind: What things do you find most tricky or frustrating in ggplot2? It might be things like specific chart types, aspects of styling, your workflow, saving charts etc.

Today's chart is a reminder that there is still some good news in the world 📊 This heatmap shows deaths from cervical cancer have dropped to 0 over a 5 year period in England for women aged 20-24. Deaths are also generally decreasing across all age groups. Made with #RStats and #ggplot2 #DataViz
Heatmap showing the number of cervical cancer deaths in women by age group (15–19 to 85+) in England and Wales from 2001 to 2024. Colour represents deaths, from yellow (fewer) to purple (more), while grey indicates no deaths recorded. Vertical markers highlight the introduction of the HPV vaccination programme for girls in 2008 and its extension to boys in 2019. The main message is that HPV vaccination has substantially reduced cervical cancer deaths in younger women: between 2020 and 2024, no cervical cancer deaths were recorded among women aged 20–24, the first time this occurred over a five-year period, with around 23 deaths expected without vaccination. The graphic states that HPV vaccination has prevented around 200 cervical cancer deaths in England.

A clear trend shows a transition from frequent cold anomalies in the late 19th century to dominant heat anomalies in the 21st century. Saturated red bars, marking the top 10 hottest seasons, are concentrated almost entirely after 1990.

Both panels show sharp declines, but the neonatal panel reveals slower progress — illustrated by shorter dumbbells relative to starting values. A callout notes that neonatal deaths rose from 39% to 47% of all under-five deaths globally between 1990 and 2023, signaling a concentration of child mortality risk in the first 28 days of life. Rates are per 1,000 live births.
