I occasionally get asked by my coastal friends if Wisco's alcohol culture really is as different as its reputation suggests, and an example I give is that the default assumption in any commercial retail establishment is that alcohol will be availble. Case in point: (via @citycastmadison.bsky.social)

Stated concerns over emergency vehicle access are used to block any number of densification and pedestrian improvement proposals. If those are actually made in good faith, one would hope that they’ll be voiced with similar fervor in support of congestion pricing

This is a good time to remember that the original B line BRT plans included lane and parking reductions on S Park, but the city caved to reactionary pushback in favor of maintaining high speeds and throughput. The carnage will continue for as long as the city decides motorist convenience is worth it

Mayor Scott signs controversial housing laws in effort to spur growth
A suite of housing and zoning reforms, once pie-in-the-sky dreams for some advocates, are now law in Baltimore, with Mayor Brandon Scott signing four bills Monday in a City Hall ceremony.

The problem with trying to regulate building aesthetics to ensure “good design” is that you have 3 bad choices of how to do it: - prescriptive design rules that kill creativity - subjective design review that empowers NIMBYs - an appointed individual with authority that can be wielded capriciously

Using data from UW Medicine facilities, including Harborview Medical Center, the study counted 282 injuries from e-scooter use between 2018-23. The people injured tended to be younger and more likely to be women, and the vast majority of injuries were from falling.

Politics and the Federal Reserve do not mix! It's not just bad for the Fed's reputation, it's also bad for the economy. Investors will be less willing to buy US assets if they can't trust the Federal Reserve to do its job without political interference.

Why Madison’s housing gatekeepers are getting uncomfortable
The argument that neighborhood preservation is a civic virtue treats structural exclusion as an unfortunate but immovable byproduct of planning. That narrative deserves scrutiny.

Through May, Baltimore has recorded 54 homicides, the fewest through the first 5 months of a year on record. The previous low: 65 homicides, in 1977. At this point in 2022, just three years ago, there had been 138 killings, and in 2017 there had been 146 people killed.

my lil piece about the DC accent and my complicated love for my hometown is now free to read without a flaming hydra subscription! flaminghydra.com/issue-288/#t...
When I was growing up, the president, whoever he was, was mainly a guy who made me late for school with big showy motorcades. Wolf Blitzer was a pretty decent customer at the Starbucks where I once worked, other famous political reporters less so. Washington suits were arrogant, unbearable pestilences in the strip clubs and restaurants where I had no choice but to serve them. Government, defense, and other downstream industries formed a shadow layer that cast the occasional pall over my daily life, but did not otherwise color it: that was a commonly-held view taken by D.C. natives of the professions that lord it over our city. When you’re living in such close quarters with the monsters who both make and abuse our national laws, living in a city that was essentially built for them but from which you know they’ll flee at the earliest opportunity, you cling to any defiance you can dig up out of yourself. You serve them, but maybe not with a smile.
