I occasionally get asked by my coastal friends if Wisco's alcohol culture really is as different as its reputation suggests, and an example I give is that the default assumption in any commercial retail establishment is that alcohol will be availble. Case in point: (via @citycastmadison.bsky.social)

Historic preservation has its place and I think brutalism, despite deserving plenty of hate, gets more than it deserves, but... come on

This is a good time to remember that the original B line BRT plans included lane and parking reductions on S Park, but the city caved to reactionary pushback in favor of maintaining high speeds and throughput. The carnage will continue for as long as the city decides motorist convenience is worth it

Madison's Common Council continues to stay focused on sensible, well-aligned transit and housing policy. It's hard to even keep track of everything they've done in just the past few years

What I love most about studying urban housing development is that this counts as data validation (Whittier Heights, Seattle, 1 home in 2011 ➡️ 4 homes in 2017)

I feel like every year, Madison's mayor proposes (and usually passes) a new spate of housing reforms aimed at expanding supply. Local elections matter (from the Madison Minutes Newsletter: link.citycast.fm/view/63d1b18...

Something few have recognized re: the WI supreme court race is that this was the GOP's only realistic shot of taking the majority this decade. To take it back before 2030 they need to win *all three* races in the next 3 consecutive years

One explanation they give for the undergraduate-level disparity hits particularly close to home for me: high-school level access. The 2-week econ module I took in senior civics didn't exactly inspire me. If my chosen pre-law track hadn't required econ, I wouldn't have studied it

The authors run some regressions in an attempt to judge the relative importance of these different factors. The results suggest that the lack of socioeconomic diversity is more likely the driver of the lack of racial/ethnic diversity, and not the other way around

Where there is variation in undergrad-level diversity, PhD programs typically admit applicants from elite programs (though I'm proud of @WIeconomics for deviating here, in no small part because I'm a beneficiary)

So what's to be done? Why is econ such an outlier? Stansbury & Schultz point to a few explanations. First up: the pipeline problem. We don't recruit or attract (or both) undergraduates from diverse backgrounds. At the UG level, as well, we're at the bottom re: SE diversity

Danny Gold @danny-gold.com · 03/11/2023
Unsurprisingly, this correlates with having worse outcomes with respect to gender and racial/ethnic diversity in the field

Danny Gold @danny-gold.com · 03/11/2023
Econ has always been among the worst fields re: socioeconomic diversity, but it's getting worse: only in the last 2-3 decades did we become the worst
110
Danny Gold @danny-gold.com · 03/11/2023
First up, and something I've noticed anecdotally: 20% of U.S. born PhD recipients in economics have at least one parent with a PhD, higher than any other field. We also have the lowest share of first-generation college graduates

You're about as likely to die in a traffic collision as a pedestrian in Miami (5.2 per 100k) as you are to be murdered in New York City (5.3 per 100k). You're also more than twice as likely to be murdered in Miami (11.2 per 100k)
