Man in a gilet stood on platform 12 gives up on reading the display and asks ChatGPT out loud if he is on the right platform for his train. I don’t want to be dramatic about it but Eratosthenes figured out the circumference of the Earth using a stick and knowledge of a distant well.

Just so you understand the depth of the cynicism: Trump’s failed war with Iran not only raised America's gas prices, but also global oil prices, which allowed Russia to make a gigantic amount of money and fund the killing of Ukrainians. And then they blame Ukraine for a disaster of

An energy and infrastructure ceasefire would be so nice. People who say that Ukrainians don't want it do not understand what a winter of Russian terror feels like. How hard it is, how devastating, how deadly. Plus, we would very much like to... not be bombed. The problem is we know Russia well,

So, if I understand Nigel Farage's argument correctly it is: "Everyone I trusted and elevated into a position of responsibility is constantly doing crimes that benefit me but of which I somehow have no knowledge. I am a man with the character, judgement, and intelligence to run the country." Ok.

French forces held a fierce defensive perimeter around Dunkirk and lost 18,000 souls. 40,000 became POWs. Without their resolve we wouldn’t have our nation’s story. It’s estimated 20-60k French resistance fighters died during the war. These fuckers really are vile bastards 😡😡

Don't imagine for one moment that the UK is immune to such forces. That was the fantasy of every former "democracy" that succumbed to illiberal forces. Surely our own lords and masters would never do such a thing? They're all good chaps, play a straight bat, respect checks and balances ... aargh!

History tells us that once it begins, there's no end to it, without massive opposition. It also tells us that countries can slip into situations very few people would have chosen, in which the great majority can be dominated and terrorised by a tiny minority, with the full backing of the law.

Sorry about the cliche, but this really is "First they came for ...". You might be comfortable with a loss of rights for people with whom you disagree. But you might not have grasped that this is everyone's loss. Which group will next be classed as terrorist, because it opposes government policy?

Some of us in the media, especially in The Guardian and alternative outlets, have been frantically trying to draw attention to this vast shift, but it's not enough. It's all too easy for people to miss it, or dismiss it as "it's just Palestine Action, or Extinction Rebellion, nothing to do with me".

These are not trivial matters. This is the entire fabric of what we call democracy being torn up. Without free speech, freedom of assembly, and robust rights to protest, democracy is a dead letter. But while this astounding change is taking place, the great majority of people are completely unaware.

This is a moment of extreme hazard, for the right to free speech, freedom of assembly and freedom to protest. But because the great majority of the media is either in favour or scarcely interested, we have failed to grasp the enormity of the situation. We could lose it all before we've woken up.

I agree the possibility of that happening is slim, but circumstances can and do change. The right wing have to be able to say 'look we tried socialism with the Labour Party, it was a disaster', they need people to fear the alternative to them.
