Went to Carsington yesterday afternoon to look for the Pec Sand from the night before. It was very distant but another wader joined it & then both spooked by a Hobby. Jon & I stuck with them & after much scrutiny in various places it became clear there were two! @derbyshirebirds.bsky.social

One of those nights when the Thorns came to play! 12+ Dusky & 1 Canary Shouldered. Maybe the buddleia helps, I don’t know. NFG Single Dotted Wave, Common Marbled Carpet. I ❤️ the cryptic Pale Prominent, Yellow Shell & Swifts. Not huge numbers but nice variety #mothsmatter @cliveaderbys.bsky.social

Simon finally persuaded me to visit the Long Tailed Shrike today. It settled into a hunting routine and wasn’t bothered by its few admirers showing really well. It took a Vole & several Grasshoppers. Pics on iPhone through Swaro scope #Shrikes lots of Corn Bunts, 2 Whinchat, Whitethroat galore.

Called at Kings Mill pits near Aston this morning. Highlight was adult Male Marsh Harrier, + 6 Herring Gulls, 12 LBBG, 8 Little Egret, 34 Cormorant, Hobby. Few hirundines - it’s changed a bit since the RRS there. Then Belper where the farmer kindly flushed 2 Quail - I dread to think re nests ☹️

Just one possible outcome... but the GFS weather forecast model is suggesting 40-41°C is possible in the UK around 7th July. This is a long-range forecast with significant uncertainty, but the fact that we are even seeing such values fairly regularly in the forecasts is extraordinary.

Manchester airport run gave me the chance for Owls in the Peak on the way back. Shorties near Buxton & Tawny there too. Moved on to a farm for 2 Barn Owls feeding young & young Long Eared begging for food. Adults didn’t like the breeze much. Little Owl near Monyash back home and a nice pint 🍻 5 up 👍

Illegal persecution of White-tailed Eagles at this intensity in grouse moors will at least greatly slow, and could jeopardise establishing a wild population in England. Which seems the keepers’ aim. Licensing with landowner culpability is overdue. #ornithology #WTE
