A level 2 out of 5 slight risk of severe weather exists in Kansas this afternoon – mainly along I-70 from Hays to Topeka and south to Hutchinson. The main concern is a couple lower-end tornadoes. If a warning is issued, seek shelter.

There is a moderate risk of flash flooding and excessive rainfall across portions of the Plains and Corn Belt tonight – especially from Norton, Kansas to Omaha and Des Moines. A general 2-4 inches is expected, with isolated 5+ inch totals.

We have the wind dynamics to support a few tornadoes in Kansas today... BUT there are a couple limiting factors. 1.) It's cloudy. That cuts back on daytime heating, reducing storm fuel. 2.) Storms will be tiny. Moist low-levels and low cloud bases will lead to small updrafts.

Tropical Storm Hanna is... disheveled. Strong winds aloft have knocked the meager system off-kilter. See its exposed low-level swirl? Notice that most of the convection, or thunderstorm activity, has been blown eastward. The central vortex is very tilted/misaligned.

MyRadar @myradar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It's exceedingly rare to have FOUR days in a row with red zone "moderate" risks of flash flooding/excessive rainfall. Polo's tropical moisture will feed into a non-tropical weather system to produce widespread torrential rains and locally significant flooding.

MyRadar @myradar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
This lopsided swirl in the North Atlantic has been named Tropical Storm Hanna. It's experiencing lots of shear – changing winds with height. That's why we see the exposed low-level swirl, yet all the tall thunderstorms have been blown to the east. Only a problem for the fish.

Hurricane Polo's inner core has broadened a little bit. Its pinhole eye has been replaced with a wider, new eye that's trying to clear out. That's broadened the wind field a bit, causing maximum winds to decrease. Still a powerhouse Category 4:

Ordinarily, when a hurricane slows down/stalls long enough, it upwells cooler waters from below – inducing its gradual weakening even if nothing else changes. But not Polo. Bath-like warmth extends nearly 200 feet below the sea surface. The result? Churning up more warmth.

And indeed, just 8 hours after this post, we awoke to a Category 5 hurricane. Winds of 160 mph in the core. Polo intensified by 110 mph in 24 hours. That's TRIPLE the rate needed to count as "rapid intensification." Polo is in a very rare, elite league.
1142
MyRadar @myradar.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
There is absolutely nothing holding back Polo right now. The storm is already inching into major hurricane territory, and now has a prominent, lightning-enveloped eye on infrared satellite. We'll probably wake up to a storm near Category 5 strength. Extreme rapid intensification.

MyRadar @myradar.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Hurricane Polo appears to be undergoing extreme rapid intensification, and will likely be a Category 5 in the next 36 hours (and probably much sooner than that – perhaps by this time tomorrow). The system has a pristine environment to take advantage of; problematic perfection.

One of the most remarkable things about the Salt Lake City-area significant (EF2+) tornado is how quickly it formed. The storm went from exhibiting weak, diffuse rotation to producing a strong/intense (perhaps EF3-strength winds) tornado in ~5 minutes.

Saturday will feature some storms on both sides of Kansas. Storms will form in the lee of the Rockies *and* along a southwest-northeast-oriented cold front sagging across the state. Sporadic wind gusts, maybe some quarter-sized hail. Nothing to write home about for most.

MyRadar @myradar.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Honestly, we're not expecting much out of today's low-end severe weather risk in Iowa. Despite a juiced-up lower atmosphere, there is a stout "cap" at 3,000-5,000 feet, working to suppress storm growth. Models don't even simulate any! If one forms, brief, isolated tornado risk.
