Ahh, new gift link here that should work (wapo.st/3VTtHIw). Super interesting RE the LFR case. Both stories perhaps examples of common enough considerations in the real world that are often avoided in lab settings - e.g., having relatives, or identical twins, in the same general face set?

This project will investigate the cognitive factors that drive over- or under-reliance on automation, and whether they hold across different applied domains. The successful candidate will design and run behavioural experiments, including a study with forensic scientists who use these tools

Automated aids increasingly support high-stakes decisions — screening baggage, identifying faces, analysing forensic evidence. But their value hinges on a human judgement: relying on them when they're right, and overriding them when they're wrong.

Checking it twice: Simple step improves face-matching accuracy
100
Dan Carragher @danieljcarragher.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
What does this all mean? Well, doing the same unfamiliar face matching task repeatedly doesn't improve an individual's performance. But combining their responses leads to the wisdom of the crowd within, which does. Whether it holds with fewer decisions (< 80), is important for more applied settings.
100
Dan Carragher @danieljcarragher.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
The responses of different observers to the same face pair are less correlated than multiple responses from the same person. In other words, three different people are less likely to make the same mistake as each other, than is the same person answering the trial repeatedly.
100
Dan Carragher @danieljcarragher.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Even though we found improvement via the wisdom of the crowd within, both experiments showed that the conventional wisdom of the crowd effect (combining responses from different people) led to greater improvements of 9% in crowds of 2, and 12% in crowds of 3. Why?
210
Dan Carragher @danieljcarragher.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
But they're much more likely to give the correct answer 2/3 times than 1/3 times! Combining these responses (we used response scale averaging, but majority rules would also work) leads to an improvement of 5% in a "crowd" of 2, and 8% in a "crowd" of 3 (compared to baseline).
100
Dan Carragher @danieljcarragher.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Importantly, participants did not improve with practice (i.e., because they did the same task 3 times). Average accuracy was ~80% each time. Rather, the improvement came only by combining their responses. Participants do not give the same identification response to the same face pair every time.
100
Dan Carragher @danieljcarragher.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Participants did the same unfamiliar face matching task three times, either in a single session (Experiment 1), or once a week for 3 weeks (Experiment 2). Then we created "within crowds" by combining the response they gave most recently with all those they had made previously for the same face pair.
100
Dan Carragher @danieljcarragher.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Unfamiliar face matching is difficult. The average person has an error rate ~20%. And it's hard to improve. In our new study, @pjbhancock.bsky.social and I find an 8% improvement in face matching performance via the "wisdom of the crowd within" effect. Paper: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
