Heartbreaking: actually struck gold at the uncool used records and books store! That’s an original pressing of Gandalf’s first self-titled for a way better price than anything I’ve seen on Discogs

"And if you're not a good little boy, you'll go to Earth when you die!" Cartoon by Jack Pierce in Fantastic Story Magazine, ed. Samuel Mines (May 1953) #scifi #sciencefiction
Mother alien with multiple legs talks to her child alien. The child has a saucer toy and his shirt says "junior saucer pilot." They are on an asteroid or planet. Earth is in the distance.

This is why it has bowled over the class of people whose lives are spent telling other people what to do. It used to be they couldn't do that to the computer, they had to tell a person who could then make the computer do it. Now they don't have to pay that person.

The advantage that people see in this is it speeds up the time from conception to useful output by eliminating the cognitive load of the user "translating" their concept for desired output into machine-readable language, by making any and all language machine-readable.

AI is the attempt to create a natural language interface for digital computation input and output. This requires orders of magnitude more computation to brute force its way through natural language's inherent ambiguity and lossiness as a signal. There, now you know what it is and does.

On today's French Fuck Friday, where we take a look at a different fucked looking French airplane each week, we have this ugly duckling: the Dewoitine 700. Eventually developed into a less ugly swan, the 750 torpedo bomber, which still looks wrong thanks to that double decker cockpit
A weirdly proportioned, nose-heavy twin engine airplane with a shoulder mounted wing and twin tail style vertical stabilizers. The entire nose portion is glazed with geometric glass panes and juts out strangely toward the bottom. The landing gear look much too spindly, giving a kind of "chicken leg" effect to the whole appearance. The Dewoitine 700 in flight, the close inboard engine nacelles on the high mounted wing giving the plane a hunched, shrugged shoulders lookThe Dewoitine 750 prototype torpedo bomber. This development retains the general layout but improves aerodynamics and adds a weird hump on top of the fuselage with what looks like an extra cockpit.

I think Peter Gabriel beat Collins to it on record, but yeah! That vastly overused production technique was their fault haha

It helps that both Gabriel and Collins were also pivotal in creating the "80s sound" through their introducing gated reverb on drums

New Past Lives: Around 600 CE, a man died and was buried near the city of Verona in northern Italy. He had led an interesting life, including a migration from present-day Hungary. Most intriguing of all, his right hand had been amputated and replaced with a knife prosthesis. pod.link/1852618120/e...

Went to the record store today, spent an hour browsing. Bought a second pressing of The Jam’s “This Is the Modern World” because my copy is trashed. Clerk asked how my kid’s doing because last time I was in there he gave her some old surplus 45s to “start her own collection.” Replicate that Claude.

The beauty of being alive in a world with other people is that we largely have no idea what we can do to satisfy the desires that drive us and we only get a taste of that satisfaction through chance encounters. Expressing desires semiotically to a machine will never result in what we *really wanted*

Greek life is so cool because, even if they aren't cooking meth in the basement and some are, they create similar disincentives to blow the whistle or confront other members as the mafia: doing the right thing risks blowing up your housing situation, current social life, and future networks.
