The thing is you gotta be obsessed with the Nazi regime to even reach for a Bonhoeffer reference here and you gotta be an incredibly twisted soul to think Bonhoeffer’s nonviolent heroism is the tragedy we can’t repeat in that story.

As a former public defender who represented thousands of people, I can’t stop thinking about the contrast the Epstein files raise. I watched 1000s face swift, devastating punishment for far less serious conduct — poor, marginalized, & presumed dangerous from the start.

There's no ICE accountability without ending qualified immunity. They're murdering people. There won't be justice for the lives they've stolen, but there must be accountability. My bill with @markey.senate.gov would ensure families can sue the agents murdering their loved ones.

It’s not about keeping us safe from criminals. This is ethnic cleansing.
Screenshot of a post on X by Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (@R…) stating: “NEW: Data released by ICE shows that virtually the entire growth of detention in the last few months has been among people with no criminal record at all—no criminal convictions and no pending criminal charges.” Below the text is a line chart titled “Detention Population, Among Those Arrested in the Interior, by Criminal Record, May 2019 through January 7, 2026.” The chart shows three lines—prior convictions, pending criminal charges, and no criminal record—with a sharp rise near the end in the “no criminal record” category. The source is listed as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

On top of the raw cruelty and the lack of any reason for this beyond the GOP commitment to allowing every rip-off they can imagine, this is also a decision to make prison *worse* at reforming/rehabilitating people, because we're making it harder for them to stay connected with people outside.

Something those of us in drug law reform have been pointing out, crystallized perfectly in Dr. Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow". So much of the drug war was dress rehearsal for what you're seeing now—suspicionless stop'n'frisk, zip-tied kids, shot dogs, tear gas, flash bangs, testilying cops.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Can I tell you a secret? I don't care if there are undocumented immigrants in this country. I think it's a non-issue. Without social security numbers they're not getting the welfare people claim they're getting, the vast majority of them are normal people trying to live a better life.
This whole wall deport-the-illegals bullshit is just the one percent convincing the working poor to blame a subset of the working poor for the fact that they're all poor, instead of realizing they're all poor due to vast income inequality and resource price inflation in combination with wage stagnation.
The existence of another poor person is not why you're poor. It's because the people who control everything refuse to increase your wages.

The deportation order is based on Vedam’s conviction for murder—a crime he did not actually commit and for which he’s now been wholly exonerated. He entered the US at 9 months old and was a legal permanent resident before his conviction. We are so, so, so far from the light of justice.

It's not the most important part of the issue but Kavanaugh saying "well they should just sue if they're the victims of excessive force from ICE" when he himself has previously voted to bar lawsuits against federal officers for violations of the 4th Amendment in immigration cases takes chutzpah.
The injunction is silent as to the use
of force. And it is not necessary for the injunction to address
that use-of-force question because the Fourth Amendment’s
reasonableness standard continues to govern the officers’
use of force and to prohibit excessive force.
To the extent that excessive force has been used, the
Fourth Amendment prohibits such action, and remedies
should be available in federal court. I agree with the
dissent on that point. But to reiterate, this injunction
against brief stops for questioning does not address the useof-force issue.
