I think he was following your logic. Also why do you assume pensioners don't know how it is funded. Mostly they knew they were funding their parents/grandparents pensions when they were in paid work & accepted it, knowing it would be them receiving the same benefit later.

Abolishing the #triplelock to index state pensions purely to CPI would save the UK government an estimated £2 billion/ year but completely abolishing higher-rate tax relief on private pension contributions would yield a significantly larger £10 billion to £15 billion per year for the Treasury.
