Me: oh wow, this shop has everything my heart desires!

Spooky shopkeeper: yes, I will warn you... every item comes with a price.

Me: yes, I know how shops work

kittydesade

Spooky Shopkeeper: The price may be more than you expect to pay.

Me: Yes, I know how US taxes work, too.

del3141

Shopkeeper, increasingly exasperated: I'm trying to tell you that I'm evil and offering these wares with no regard for the harm they will do!

Me, also increasingly exasperated: I know what capitalism is too goddammit

New thesis statement just dropped. Applicable everywhere, always, at all times.
A Boolean toggle, labeled "I reject the premise". The toggle is green, to show that it is engaged and enabled, and may well be the default. As may well be required for us to survive the oncoming deluge of bullshit.

My next book has a whole section on the psychology behind "People becoming successful by simply lying about already being successful then charging other people to learn their 'secrets' about how to become successful". This would make a perfect case study, but I doubt the legal team will go with it.

Lawvers for Andrew Tate have had to admit in
court that he is not a citizen of Estonia as he
previously claimed.
Much of his wealth and status is fabricated, they
said in attempt to convince the court he and his
brother are not a flight risk if released on bail
That included his claims to seven passports.
"The Tates are engaged in several businesses
teaching men how to earn money. It is in their
interest to portray themselves on social media
as uberwealthy." 1/3

Sadly, I fear that lack of social and political will is actually a major shortcoming of collective human capability. But I agree that it's not an ingenuity problem.

I think the key is that the incentives around reactors and bombs are staggeringly simple by comparison to LLMs.

Which also might get at OP's point about insanity, although I wouldn't say it's clear that this is cause or effect.

Heh. There's another one I can attribute more surely: Teller (of Penn & Teller) said: "Sometimes magic is just someone spending more time on something than anyone else might reasonably expect.” That might fit here, too.

What a fun, weird quirk of language that English cannot keep track of gender in groups of 2 or more. Even in homogenous same-gender groups! We're all them down here.

Claude is, of course, a masculine name in English, and chosen to be so, I'm sure. Which does demand some questions about Sydney, and Siri, and Taylor...

I've been dwelling way too much on this notion: LLMs can do nothing but predict the most likely word ( ok, token, but shaddup) to come next after a given preamble. Electric power is created by a wheel turning and makes some other wheel turn. All else is harness.
