up in the Trinity Mountains along Hwy 3, Scott Mountain Creek heads downstream through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest towards its confluence with Tangle Blue Creek which then merges with the Trinity River.
if there was a single highway in northern California that you could drive for sightseeing, I'd say Hwy 3 should be the one.

This is going to be a bit of a climb! Rustic steps made of wood & dirt run up from a deep ravine. Lining the incline, the traces of autumn are unmistakable. Maple leaves, dried and fallen lie everywhere in the forest bramble. A few ferns hanging on but looking less than themselves as they succumb to drought. A tall thick trunk tree overhangs the stairs, it's branches reaching out and holding frilly moss. The end of the forest staircase is not visible but promises of blue sky peek through the tree branches closer to the top. A very autumn like photo. This is the first time I've walked through this forest that there hasn't been a river running, no sound, very strange & concerning. To witness the dry riverbed is to feel the very real consequences of our shifting climate.

Beneath a gray overcast sky, we are hiking along a stream through a forest of hemlock and hardwoods with autumn foliage in bright yellows, greens, golds and oranges. The stream cascades over rocks and through the ruins of old stone walls of a mill. It is raining lightly and has been raining harder, the stream is a roaring torrent. The surrounding forest floor is rocky and covered with freshly fallen leaves and more than a few fallen branches and tree trunks.
