ICE shot a man in the back in Austin this afternoon. But we're also learning this weekend about the death of Carlos Josué Marchena, a 37-year old man from Costa Rica who appears to have died at the Winn concentration camp in Louisiana after 9+ months in ICE detention.

Beginning my research seminar, as always, with Lynn Hunt's essay How Writing Leads to Thinking (and Not the Other Way Around). Should be mandatory reading in light of the impact of AI. www.historians.org/perspectives...
Writing is stressful. Sitting in my computer chair my neck and shoulder muscles almost immediately tense up as I dig around in my brain for the best phrase or even any coherent string of words, whether I am writing an essay like this one, a book chapter, a letter of recommendation, or an email message to a friend. Writing is time-consuming. It’s a great way to pass the time on a long airplane flight because you lose track of the passage of time altogether. It’s even better, from that point of view exclusively, than watching an episode of Mad Men on your laptop. Writing means many different things to me but one thing it is not: writing is not the transcription of thoughts already consciously present in my mind. Writing is a magical and mysterious process that makes it possible to think differently.

Urbanism is really compatible with left anti-authoritarian politics but if you tell potential allies to urbanism that they can't be on the team unless they sacrifice existing deeply held principles, you won't win them over to speed cameras; you're just going to turn them away from urbanism.

The new plans for Twin Oaks are a generational mistake. We were promised mid-rises with homes, office, and retail that reached the lot line and opened to the street. Instead, we're getting a one-story, suburban mess with a literal wall to the street. This site is where the new light rail ends!

Autopsies of Black Lives Matter and George Floyd protests often conclude that movements produced tough-on-crime backlash. My new study in Work and Occupations finds a different kind of movement outcome: BLM changed how local reporters cover cops and jails. 🧵 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
Beyond Police Stenography: How Disembedding Enables Critical Crime News Work

Prior research finds that crime journalists reproduced criminal justice organization standpoints through close working relationships with law enforcement. How do crime reporters relate to police sources today? Drawing on interviews with 58 journalists across 40 local newsrooms in 24 U.S. states, I find that disembedding from law enforcement organizations restructures many reporters’ source relationships, creating conditions under which some journalists enact a distinct professional identity through occupational activism. I argue that the critical crime journalist role is distinguished by a commitment to alternative sourcing practices, structural framing, and reinterpreted objectivity. Informants connect critical orientations to repeated exposure to official dishonesty and the influence of Black-led social movements against police violence. Critical crime journalists amplify civilian and prisoner voices and engage in contextual reporting, treating coverage as a vehicle to shift how readers understand criminalized people and the criminal justice system more broadly. These findings extend scholarship on occupational activism into crime journalism and identify pathways into this form of empirical and expressive occupational activism.

Texas is growing and urbanizing, making new demands for efficient modes of travel between homes, shops, workplaces, and more. We need to act like it. All Texans deserve safe streets and robust transit options. Better TxDOT spending that prioritizes maintenance — not expansion — of roads would help.

Last year, the Texas Legislature passed SB 840, a landmark reform allowing housing in commercial zones. Already, it has unlocked 8,000 homes. The bill is limited to our largest cities and failed to prevent some dubious efforts to get around it. It’s time we fix the policy and broaden its scope.
