Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

RIP Margaret Hamilton. Here standing next to a print out of the software she wrote that landed Apollo 11 on the moon
A black-and-white historical photograph of computer scientist Margaret Hamilton standing next to a towering stack of printed software code for the Apollo space program.

**Subject:**
Margaret, a young woman with long, straight hair and wire-rimmed glasses, stands on the left side of the frame, smiling warmly at the camera. She is wearing a long-sleeved, mid-thigh-length dress with horizontal stripes and dark, flat Mary Jane shoes. Her hands are placed near the top of the massive stack of binders, stabilizing them.

**The Stack:**
To her right, a giant stack of bound documents rises directly from the dark tiled floor to just above her shoulder height. The stack consists of roughly 15 thick, heavy binders stuffed with printed pages of code, slightly uneven and leaning to one side.

**Background and Setting:**
The scene is set in an office or lab with a two-toned wall.
* To the far left, a wooden door is partially visible next to a tall metal coat rack holding a few empty hangers.
* To the right, a chalkboard hangs on the wall. Handwritten in white chalk are columns of technical abbreviations and codes, including:
  * `MTOA - S`
  * `CRIA - C`
  * `MTIA - X1`
  * `MT2A - X2`
  * `CRIA - B1`
  * `CPIA - B0`
  * `CPJA - PU`
  * `TYIA - TY`
  * `CRIA - SI`
  * `LPIA - LO`
  * `MT2A - GO`
* A black electrical outlet is mounted on the wall below the blackboard.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights.As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data.These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.
