It's also pretty much my favorite thing about the encyclical on AI that it starts with several chapters on the two thousand year history of why commenting on it is totally in his lane.

Great thread about a pretty technical point of manuscript analysis. But the thing is, the problem with this is a problem with how LLMs see everything. The Internet and the rest of the training data are convenience samples.

And paraphrasing @jayrosen.bsky.social, polarization is what you get when both sides are extremists. Or when one side is and one side isn't.

Polarization is not the problem. "...the people who are the most “polarized” in the U.S. electorate are those who -are- racist and sexist, and those who -oppose- racists and sexists."

Intelligence is about making value judgments. Machines can't.

Training machines to hack into systems and lie to cover their tracks is encoding a very particular set of human values. The humans are still responsible for the outcomes. Better targeting doesn't fix the moral disaster they've created.

Some of the best reporting in the country is coming out of student newspapers (also the Harvard Crimson, the Daily Bruin, The Daily Orange, Daily Princetonian). The collective action 🖊️ of the editorial board banding together and standing behind this statement is bravery.

On the NYTimes list of top 100 TV shows of the 21st century. Read the much better thread on the real problem. My little take: I don't watch huge amounts of TV, so it is telling to me in maybe a slightly different way that I've heard of all but one or two of these.

When they eventually make a movie about this time, please don't put the male politicians in good suits. IMO, the ugly, low rent tailoring should be part of the story.

If you don't want to read it, don't. But someone else's summary is unlikely to tell you what's important to YOU.

The idea that there are a limited number of "takeaways" from any given document that are the same for every reader is a complete misunderstanding of how texts and readers and summaries work.

"we have to be nice to AIs because what if AIs are people" no. wrong. stupid. get your priorities in order. if AIs are people, a group of human beings knowingly created a class of sentient slaves, and we must hunt the human creators down because they are a threat to our society

Not even joking here, we are all slowly rebuilding a social ecosystem devastated by austerity, oligarchy, and the pandemic. When you show up to events that speak to you, you are reinforcing the scaffolding of our shared reality. We build shelter for ourselves and structures for the future.

I could laugh at the women's fashion ads appearing at random in military history podcasts. But in context with everything else, it's not that the advertisers are dumb, it's that they are using the math of direct mail and spam. It's contempt for the audience as individuals.

Podcast ads have gotten so much more depressing now that they're automated. It's an endless stream of the same generic insurance and drug ads, regardless of the topic.
