Pussywillow-Tailed Cats - 2024 [ #art #illustration #botanicats ]

The spring stems of the pussywillow plant. The flowers are puffy and white and line the stems like pompoms. Amongst the flowers are tiny cats of the same colors who have tails that mimic the pussywillow flowers perfectly.

If you see this, post a monster! Here's an old watercolor of a feisty little snapdragon.

A watercolor illustration of what appears at first to be a relatively normal snapdragon flower, but closer inspection reveals that it is actually a creature with the flowers forming multiple heads, and some of the leaves and roots becoming limbs and tails.

I think I've posted this one before but it's still one of my favorites. Hangs on my own wall. "Kings Lost" - pyrography, ink, several kinds of metallic gold art supplies, gouache. #tiger #skull #art #pyrography #woodburning #mixedmedia

A Siberian tiger skull woodburning on wood panel; it has a halo of abstract woodburned and bright metallic gold designs behind it. The skull itself has faint intricate white designs painted onto it loosely inspired by neolithic patterns. The color scheme is ivory bone, burnt sienna, burnt blacks, white, and metallic gold.

Good morning! How are you holding up? What are you up to today? These little guys were growing on an alder. They seem to be a tiny fungus topped with moss -- not a pairing I usually see! Each cap is 2 or 3 cm wide. Alders support an amazing ecosystem, at least in our climate!

Tiny half-cap (semi-circle) fungus grow out of the bark, brown gills visible because the cap is slightly cupped upward.
Each cap has a coating of green moss that is visible at the lip.

The #littlecaps were kind enough to provide for me another guide, this time for the Gnome

Sketches of a small, hairy gnome. Top text reads: “the gnome is an amicable sort that always travels in groups of two or more. They are usually working toward a goal and will not be distracted by your presence.”
A drawing of a gnome holding a bracer is captioned: “if a gnome presents you with a gift before waiting expectantly, he certainly wishes for you to groom his hair.” The next text continues “braids and pigtails seem to be popular, as well as weaving in small flowers.” An additional text box adds: “if you take the gift without doing this you are RUDE and shall be SCOLDED!”
Bottom left reads: “the gnome’s claws make them great diggers, but all offers to employ them to expand our warrens have been denied. It is not known why.”
A drawing of a gnome sniffing the ground is captioned: “Gnomes are excellent at judging the quality of earth. Be sure not to burrow in an area they consider unsatisfactory.” and “Grinding of their teeth and stomping of the feet are signs of their displeasure that we have observed.”
Bottom right reads: “when trading with a gnome, offer wood or seeds. They’ve no interest in meat.”

#HotStickSaturday I especially love the little taupe tightly frilled one on the top right twig, with two wings like earflaps. I tried to find it in my lichen encyclopedia but got lost in the marvels for hours: innumerable hazy wonders, like a trip to faerie, but still no ID. #lichen #fungifriends

A fallen Douglas Fir branch sits on some (very clean, thank you, I just swept it) landscape fabric. The bare parts of its stem are covered with lichens - the older and thicker the branch, the denser and more varied the lichen-load. The larger twigs have foliose lichens (various Usnea, Evernia are ones I'm confident about), numerous fruticose, and a few crustose, in shades of white and grey and olive and taupe. Medium twigs are a mix of fruticose and crustose with a few foliose; they give the impression of having a tougher texture, more resistent to drying, even though the whole twig is only a few feet big. The smallest twigs have a few foliose tufts but numerous bright yellow crustose patches that look like splatter from industrial spraypaint.
