Cetacea
Digital Drawing. An early whale (Pakicetus) stands at the water's edge, bending down for a drink. Behind it is a wall of tall grasses/reeds. The entire scene is shown within the shape of a blue whale. Despite the vast gulf in form and time between the two animals, they are of the same group: Cetacea.

I've quoted this post by JMS (Babylon 5, Sense8, etc) for years now. It's long, and he's talking about genre fans here, but genre fans of the 1990s are now genre writers. www.midwinter.com/lurk/guide/0...
Too long for full alt text, the gist is that genre fans have "a limited frame of reference" to genre work. Fans try to link things in Babylon 5 to Lord of the Rings, but JMS was thinking about Orpheus. Or more broadly, that genre works have broad and deep inspirations, in ancient, classical, and medieval stories, themselves that genre fans are ignorant of.

Thief remains one of the best-looking movies I've ever seen in my life
three safecrackers wearing protective gear and working on opening a safe, with gold sparks in the air, surrounded by a smoky-looking fog from a fire extinguisher closeup on the black hood of a car at night with city lights reflected on its glossy surface James Caan in the middle of a used car lot that's on fire. there's a pink and blue neon sign in the background and strings of white lights above that are reflected on the cars' surfaces, especially one black car that takes up most of the foreground closeup on a gloved hand holding a metal rod, the other hand holding a blowtorch being applied to the metal creating a spray of pinky gold sparks

Photo of a hand holding an original tiny seascape oil painting by Tisha Mark, "Tiny Seascape No. 2502" 4″x2.5″ oil on Arches paper (2025). This atmospheric seascape is painted in a limited palette of blues and whites, and has textured white cloud formations over a deep blue sea with a rocky coast. A paint palette with puddles of oil paint, a paintbrush, and palette knife that were used to paint this tiny piece are visible in the background.

Eldredgeops rana trilobites, with soft tissues (legs, gills, antennae) reconstructed from fossil evidence, in bronze. Sculpted from scratch, no scans. Trilobites have been extinct for a quarter-billion years, but I hope if you squint your eyes, you can almost believe... #SciArt
A pair of bronze Eldredgeops rana trilobites in my open hand against a white background. One crawls on my palm, rearing the front of its segmented body, antennae raised. The other is upside down over my index finger, breach position, apparently trying to right itself. Both have compound eyes made of an array of individual lenses, much like many modern arthropods.A bronze Eldredgeops rana trilobite, enrolled into a tight ball, held between my thumb and index finger against a white background, seen from the side. The lenses of the compound eye are clearly visible. Enrollment/conglobation has evolved independently many times among arthropods, and was a common adaptation seen in a diverse array of trilobite genera.
