Job hunting in a hostile environment. ✨
A three panel comic done in mostly a blue-purple ink. Frame 1: The artist, a tired person with their hair in a bun and a bag on their shoulder standing in the awning of a bus shelter. There's an ad on it that says "STOP HIRING HUMANS", above a woman whose face has been replace with the word "AI".
Frame 2: The bus comes, it's wrapped in an ad that also says "STOP HIRING HUMANS." The artist has a blank look.
Frame 3: A plane has now arrived above the bus and the human. It's carrying an ad banner that also says "STOP HIRING HUMANS".

GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...
reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Heavily inspired by Morrowind, Planescape and 70's Star Wars with a dash of bronze age and art nouveau. The mood? Conan after Conan: all the heroes are dead and this is the world they built. That's OMIOS URES, my weird fantasy RPG. And it's FREE on itch.io! matheusgraef.itch.io/omios-ures
A black robed wizard, embroided with stars, stands on top of a stone peak. Behind him, the vastness of the world. The early morning creeps amidst the ravines, painting the world in coy lilacs and deep purples. A city of horned spires jolts from the stony wastes, illuminated in bright cosmopolitan oranges. An alien zeppelin flares out its floodlights at the rooftops and beyond.

The wizard stares at the viewer, though we do not see within his cloak and hood. Blackness. From the void creeps out two marble-white hands, old as time, covered in rings, gesturing in unknown signs.

OMIOS URESTwo Carverine (orc-like humanoids), a male and a female, ride alongside eachother, on top of war hippos. They hold each other's arms. With the other hand, the female orc displays a freshly decapitated head - the enemy king. While the male lifts his axe up in prideful show. Both orcs have red hair and pinkish-gray skin, similar to the hippos they ride upon. The carverine have long, elephant like tusks, and wear minimal bronze armor.

The gnome has blue nails, pointy shoes and an art nouveau walking stick. above him is in the text "GNOMOS" in an orange, art nouveau font.A giant cyclops. Slender, female. Her armor is golden bronze, made of large plates with shield-sized domes protusions, which help veer off attacks. She wears a golden diadem, golden earrings, and her single eye is bright blue. Her armor shines from the warm light that trickles into the large chamber, pouring in from an off-scene oculus. Her face partially in the dark, tall that she is, only illuminated partially by the bounce lighting of her armor. Her right arm adjusts her belt, while her left arm is lifted, underneath it; we see a shirtless servant on top of a tall staircase, tying the laces of her bracer. The staircase is built of beige stone. The bracer is almost the size of this person. By the cyclops' feet, we see two other servants donning her greaves. One of them holds the giant slab of bronze in place, while the other, behind the cyclops' calf, ties up the laces. The floor is a white marble tile, giving the entire scene a slight reflection.

Did you know a single greave of this Cyclops weighs around 150 kilos?

Behind the Princes Warrior, we see a 2 story tall greataxe. It is brightly illuminated by the single shaft of light that brightens the entire room. In fact, the entire scene is illuminated either by the natural light, or the bounce lighting of the cyclops' armor, giving the entire painting a warm look.

The chamber is large and tall, made of stone, to accomodate the Princess Warrior. A small brazier burns incense, permeating the room with a pleasant odor of cloves. Behind the Cyclops and her servants, three noble folk overlook her befitting from a balcony. The balcony sits at the height of the Cyclops' head. One woman smokes, the man in the middle lifts a goblet with a grin, and the leftmost woman looks simply bored. There's a glass pitcher hewn with gold half-filled with wine next to them.

no clue of this context but yes actually, this is true! ebikes allow people to expend similar amounts of energy to go significantly further. ebikes are a modifier on one's ability to travel by bike, allowing for significant or even full car replacement in many cases.
Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives
Volume 1, June 2019, 100017

Physical activity of electric bicycle users compared to conventional bicycle users and non-cyclists: Insights based on health and transport data from an online survey in seven European citiesPhysical activity levels, measured in Metabolic Equivalent Task minutes per week (MET min/wk), were similar among e-bikers and cyclists (4463 vs. 4085). E-bikers reported significantly longer trip distances for both e-bike (9.4 km) and bicycle trips (8.4 km) compared to cyclists for bicycle trips (4.8 km), as well as longer daily travel distances for e-bike than cyclists for bicycle (8.0 vs. 5.3 km per person, per day, respectively). Travel-related activities of e-bikers who switched from cycling decreased by around 200 MET min/wk., while those switching from private motorized vehicle and public transport gained around 550 and 800 MET min/wk. respectively.
Therefore, this data suggests that e-bike use leads to substantial increases in physical activity in e-bikers switching from private motorized vehicle and public transport, while net losses in physical activity in e-bikers switching from cycling were much less due to increases in overall travel distance.
