Imagining people who do evil things to be devoid of empathy is a way of comforting oneself, because we all know that we feel empathy and therefore are not the kind of person who could do *that.* It’s much scarier to know that a conglomeration of circumstances can turn basically anybody bad.

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

Really frustrating to watch a cop drive through my local school zone doing 65 kmh because local speed cams were a waste of money (and upset drivers speeding past the school) and then drive up the road to have my plates photographed outside Tim Hortons for no discernible safety reason.

New from Brepols - Visual Networks of Healing in Renaissance Italy Editors: Sandra Cardarelli, Valentina Živković www.brepols.net/products/IS-... #earlymodern
A nearly square book cover, with the author and editor info presented in black text within a cream-colored square superimposed over the featured image. The image is a renaissance painting (mural?) of a half-dressed woman in a bed with a bandage wound around her right arm. Two women stand by the bed, apparently celebrating the recovery of the woman in the bed.

Even just a quick shout out — I see you! — is not only rhetorically advantageous in building pathos; it also highlights projects that are often invisible internally + lets local leaders know abt external validation

Augustus loved the spectacle of watching boxing 🥊 matches & regular Romans engaged in street fighting (Suet. Aug. 45.2). He didn’t set up a gauche UFC arena but it reminds us: men who leave warfare to others often enjoy watching others fight for their benefit—on a battlefield or in an amphitheater.
