Giant viruses carry their own "chemical toolkit" to change the fats in the cells they infect
We found that giant viruses encode a key enzyme (VKOR) usually found in cells to perform redox reactions. This enzyme is part of a larger module that can modify membrane lipids. These "mini pathway" t...

New research from IU microbiologist Cristina Landeta and undergrad Rebecca Collins shows that giant viruses carry previously unrecognized tools that may reshape how infected cells regulate redox balance and membrane composition. The study was published in PNAS. go.iu.edu/rBBx14 @cris-s.bsky.social

For non-scientists: the funding rate is somewhere between 7% to ~25% (rare) for NIH or NSF grants, depending on where you are applying. Grants are reviewed by a panel of peers who read the grants, score them, then debate the ratings for 1-2 days to rank them. It is INCREDIBLY competitive already.

As markets plummet again today from Trump's chaotic economic policies, ask yourself: Why would billionaires back policies that tank their own stock values? It’s the taxes. I wrote a step-by-step explainer of how billionaires avoid paying taxes. People are often surprised when I explain it.🧵

People gathered in front of the state house in Indianapolis on March 7th 2025 to protest the funding cuts and destruction of DEIA measures. Signs say for examples: « You know it’s bad when that many introverts rally » « Science not silence » « what makes America great? Science »People gathered in front of the state house in Indianapolis on March 7th 2025 to protest the funding cuts and destruction of DEIA measures. A woman is wearing a shirt that says « humanity needs science ». Approximately 200 people of a range of ages stood up for science and listened to speakers highlighting how we should not remain silent and we should instead listen to our inner voice that does not agree with the measures taken in these past 46 days.

Spending isn't a “conspiracy” just because Musk doesn’t know how to read usaspending.gov. A program isn't waste just because it doesn’t help the richest man in the world. It isn't fraud just because he doesn’t like it. A law is not illegal just because he disagrees with it.

At least $12 *trillion* from global oligarchs is hidden offshore in secret tax havens worldwide. And it is headquartered right here in the USA. Instead of cutting lifesaving programs like the VA, Medicaid, and food stamps, we should be cracking down on tax havens for the ultra-rich.
