Centrifugation of plasma gel-tubes is superior for diabetes screening.
Despite warnings from the American Diabetes Association, fluoride tubes are often used for glucose testing as granulated citrate tubes are not approved in the US. We examined the rates of in vitro glycolysis in conditions that reflect typical outpatient workflows and demonstrate that simple centrifugation of plasma gel-tubes is far more effective in obtaining accurate glucose results for diabetes screening.

Studying Molecular Clusters with Advanced Ultracentrifugation Techniques
The study utilized analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) to analyze molecular clusters, particularly focusing on their molecular weight, size, shape, and association behavior in native solution environments. The methodology involved using the latest instrumentation to conduct sedimentation velocity and equilibrium experiments, allowing for the characterization of hydration shell thickness, intermolecular distances in dimers, and adsorption of organic ligands in molecular cluster systems. AUC provided detailed insights without requiring sample immobilization or labeling, which were enhanced by recent advancements in data analysis software. The research demonstrated the versatility of AUC in resolving individual species within complex mixtures, proving its effectiveness in detecting cluster dissociation, oligomer formation, and selective binding interactions. Despite not discussing large supramolecular assemblies in detail, the study highlighted AUC's applicability to such systems due to its sensitivity and ability to determine individual concentrations. The findings underscored AUC's capability to study cluster-containing solutions, particularly through MW-AUC, which leverages differences in absorption spectra for resolving species.

New Metal Framework Boosts Efficiency of Turning Nitrates into Ammonia
The study focused on developing transition-metal-porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), specifically NU-902(M) with different metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu), for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction under neutral conditions. Researchers engineered these frameworks by coordinating metalated tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (M-TCPP) with Zr6O4(OH)4(CO2)12 clusters, forming a mesoporous structure. NU-902(Cu) was identified as the most effective, achieving a Faradaic efficiency of 71.65% and an NH3 yield rate of 13.76 mg•h-1•mg cat.-1 at -0.9 V vs. RHE. The study demonstrated that NU-902(Cu) maintained a Faradaic efficiency above 65% after 500 cycles without significant structural degradation, confirmed via powder X-ray diffraction. This work showcased the potential of porphyrinic MOFs in ammonia synthesis by enhancing nitrogen valorization through electrocatalysis. It provided experimental insights into optimizing metal-specific catalytic activity within MOFs.

Making communication a right for U.S. children with communication disorders
Every child should be able to express themselves, be understood, participate in school, and have a say in decisions affecting their life. Yet children with communication disorders often face delays in assessment and treatment, limited access to communication supports, and school environments that do not meet their needs. This article explains how international children's rights principles can help address these problems in the United States, even though the U.S. has not ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The article uses a recent report from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to show how communication can be treated as a fundamental right rather than simply a clinical or educational service.

Identifying hearing loss early in older adults with a smartphone app
Hearing loss is common in older adults but is often missed during routine health checks. We tested whether a simple smartphone app could screen for hearing loss more accurately than the methods currently used in primary care clinics in Chile, including standard check-ups and asking patients if they have trouble hearing. The smartphone app correctly identified 9 in 10 people with mild hearing loss and almost everyone with moderate hearing loss, outperforming other methods. Patients and health staff also found the app easy and acceptable to use, suggesting it could help detect hearing loss earlier in everyday primary care contexts.

Rethinking Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Programs from the ground up with people with aphasia.
People with aphasia (difficulty using or understanding language, often after stroke) usually have many different needs, not just problems with words. Aphasia can affect confidence, relationships, mood, daily activities, and quality of life. Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Programs (ICAPs) are a type of service that tries to address these needs by offering lots of different therapies over a short period of time, often in a “bootcamp‑style” programme. ICAPs are used internationally and are becoming more common. However, despite their popularity, it has often been unclear how ICAPs are supposed to work, which parts of them are most important, and whether they might also have unintended negative effects. The study used a method called a Theory of Change, which is a structured way of explaining how and why an intervention is expected to lead to particular outcomes. The researchers: - Reviewed the existing ICAP research literature. - Created an initial “theoretical” model of how an ICAP is meant to work. - Worked directly with people with aphasia (eight participants) in a series of focus groups. - Asked participants not only about benefits, but also about possible negatives or risks (“dark logic”). - Mapped the results onto a logic model, showing inputs, activities, outcomes, and longer‑term impacts. This means the model was shaped by both research evidence and lived experience.

Family Crisis in the West: A Civilizational Perspective
The modern family in the West is built upon the principle of individualism, which places the individual in a position of importance. This idea has traversed a long historical and semantic journey, marked by tensions and fluctuations that have culminated in tangible historical outcomes. This study aims to critically analyze this trajectory by tracing its main semantic junctures, and to construct a civilizational framework that reinterprets it from a novel vantage point, in an attempt to pave the way for the reframing of the family as a social institution and practical domain with its distinct epistemological and ethical aspects, thus transcending the binary opposition between effacing the individual and positing individualism as the singular foundational principle.

What Do Sex Chromosomes Have to Do with a Stressed Brain?
While everyone, no matter their age, sex, or ethnicity, can become depressed, women are twice as likely to be diagnosed compared to men. Further, women with depression often have more symptoms, more severe symptoms, and are more likely to find that the front-line pharmaceutical treatments aren't effective in treating their symptoms; a condition which is clinically described as "treatment-resistant" depression. While one might immediately think this is based on cultural factors such as men not seeking help or that living in a patriarchal society impacts women's emotional health, evidence suggests that there are biologic causes as well. For example, this disparity in depression rates between men and women is paralleled in rodent models as well. Female mice show anxiety and depressive-like responses to short, intense stress paradigms whereas male mice do not. However, the underlying source of those differences are in question. Here, we investigated gene expression in two brain regions important for stress in a mouse line called the Four Core Genotypes (FCG) model. In most mammals, females have two copies of the X chromosome while males have one copy of the X chromosome and one copy of the Y chromosome. The Y chromosome contains a gene, SRY, which programs the development of testes and in its absence the organism produces ovaries. In the FCG line, the SRY gene is removed from the Y chromosome and placed on an autosome, which produces animals with all of the possible combinations of sex chromosomes and gonads. So, while the FCG line produces the typical combinations (e.g., XY mice with testes), an FCG mouse could also have two XX chromosomes and have testes or have XY chromosomes and have ovaries. This is really useful because it allows us to disentangle how these two components of biologic sex (i.e., sex chromosomes and gonads) play a role in behavioral responses to stress. First, we exposed all four combinations of the FCG mice to the same short, intense stress paradigm mentioned above. In typical mice, females are susceptible while males are resilient. In FCG mice, we found that animals with two XX chromosomes were vulnerable to stress regardless of whether they had ovaries or testes. On the other hand, XY mice were resilient no matter what set of gonads they had. This sets up how important sex chromosome complement is in understanding the relationship between biologic sex and stress effects. After stress, we profiled gene expression in two regions which are important for modulating the effect of stress: the nucleus accumbens (NAc), a region which is central for encoding rewarding stimuli, and the prefrontal cortex (PFC), a region crucial for behavioral regulation and motor control. Across both regions, we found little overlap in the ways stress exposure changed gene expression between males and females. This parallels what our team and other teams have demonstrated in human depression. In humans, depression leads to divergent patterns of gene expression in brain regions important for the depression disease process. In this present work, stress exposure altered pathways related to immune function in stress susceptible XX mice. While in stress resilient XY mice, stress exposure altered pathways involved in neuronal function. However, the effect of stress exposure was unique to the two regions we investigated. In the NAc, the pattern of gene expression created by stress exposure was shared by mice who had the same sex chromosomes. However, in the PFC, both sex chromosomes and gonad type contributed. In total, our findings implicate both sex chromosomes and gonad type in understanding the effect of stress, suggesting that both factors should be explored in understanding risk for depression in humans and stress susceptibility in rodent models of disease.

Why is cannibalism one of the strongest taboos worldwide, yet it has repeatedly appeared but never lasted? New math models reveal deadly disease risks make it unsustainable and cultural bans evolved as vital protections. Published by @pnas.org Read the summary here: link.growkudos.com/1f9qb5g4zcw

The world's strongest taboo: Why don't humans eat each other?
While cannibalism is one of the most powerful and universal taboos in modern human societies, archaeological and historical evidence shows it has repeatedly emerged throughout our evolutionary history. Why does a behavior that triggers such deep moral aversion keep recurring, but rarely ever lasts? This study introduces a formal mathematical model that treats human flesh as a conditional foraging resource, balancing short-term energetic payoffs against escalating long-term costs. The results reveal that while cooking and scavenging can make cannibalism temporarily viable during extreme starvation crises, repeated practice creates a deadly epidemiological trap. Pathogens transmit with maximum efficiency between individuals sharing identical physiology, causing infection costs to multiply exponentially as consumption chains grow. Ultimately, the model demonstrates that sustained cannibalism rapidly triggers demographic collapse, showing that deeply ingrained cultural taboos are not arbitrary prohibitions, but vital evolutionary defense mechanisms designed to protect human populations from extinction.

Fasting may help the intestine recover from radiation damage by increasing Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium linked to stem cell renewal and tissue repair. Published by @pnas.org. Read the summary here: link.growkudos.com/1e5vj4fmkg0

Fasting alters the gut microbiome to improve intestinal recovery after radiation treatment
Our previous studies showed that fasting can protect the small intestine from radiation damage in preclinical models. In this study, we provided mechanistic insight into how this protection occurs. We found that fasting reshapes the gut microbiome by enriching the beneficial bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila, which produces the metabolite propionate. Propionate reprograms gene regulation in intestinal cells, creating a population of "primed persister" cells that are poised to rapidly respond to injury. As a result, the intestine is better equipped to repair itself and recover from radiation damage.
