This. Same with drawing. I don’t do it just to see the finished piece, I do it because I enjoy MAKING it, the process is my hobby and therapy both.

I'm not worried about Skynet, I'm worried about the fact that I went from 100k+ a year to borrowing money every month to pay rent because billionaires decided to use the technology to kill as many artists as they could. I'd love to just unplug it; they've spent billions on plug security.

One of the reasons I despise AI is how it robs imagination twice. First it steals from creatives and thinkers to make slop. Then it lets users bypass rather than learn a creative process. The political timing isn’t accidental. We need imagination to envision a better world that we’ll fight for.

See, these are three HUGE realizations about yourself and *your* process People can take years to make realizations like this through therapy. You have the personal insight, and the commitment, to make them on your own, in a pretty darn fast way i might add!

An oldie but goodie thread 🧵 on neurodivergence (specifically #ADHD), cycling in and out of #hyperfocus and/or the actively creative phase, and #procrastination Takeaway: If you’re still feeling the #anxiety over a problem, you are not procrastinating. Procrastination would be avoiding that anxiety

from nowhere. We’re thinking it over, turning it around in our minds, trying out maybe this strategy, or maybe that ruleset, until something (for lack of a better term) “clicks.” And when that click finally happens, we’re off like a shot. Suddenly we just…have the next piece of the puzzle.

we absolutely do keep pondering concerns and problems in the “back of our mind” while we’re doing other things. Society will call that #procrastination It’s not. It’s just a part of our process. Because for us, very commonly inspiration seems to just suddenly come from nowhere. But nothing comes

😌 fwiw, i don’t see you as “flailing” at all, although i fully understand that’s genuinely how it feels. I feel it too. For me, “leaning into the ADHD” is really key, because it’s useful for ADHD’s to do exactly what you’re doing—wait. I don’t necessarily think that’s the case for everyone, but

When we’re talking about creativity, what most us need help with isn’t figuring out the “rules” — it’s disregarding them. What does it mean, to have our own process? If everyone’s isn’t the same, how do we even know what “our process” is? What really IS this creativity thing all about?

Thank you so much for sharing your thought process here! If what we’re enabling (complimentary) is not just a question/answer process, but a “refine our thoughts and ask a better question” process— —I would be thrilled with that. Because ppl may have answers, but will they be the answer for *you*

I like this essay, because it illustrates how we can uncover our own unique motivational structures, and our own process. Fen does not operate well on a “save the best for last” or “treat yourself after you Do The Thing” process. Fen’s process needs the treat first; then she’s ready for The Thing:

I ask this question because we have all been trained to work a neurotypical “creative process.” Which is slightly ironic, insomuch as #creativity is really more about breaking through our predetermined expectations. So it’s natural that neurodivergents have unusual, or undefined, creative process.

While pondering your dilemma, a question occurred to me: Is this struggle a newer one for you, or has it been ongoing throughout most of your life? That might give us some clues about what your process is, and how to make it work better for you. (If I’ve misunderstood, please correct me)

It’s important to remember that our models for motivation are all based on neurotypical neurology. Neurodivergents have a different process. So if you feel like you’re struggling for motivation, even to do things you like, give yourself a break. It’s not your fault were given the wrong handbook.

Aha!
Dopamine first.
That's the key.
Okay, hear me out.
Several things clicked into place for me yesterday as I was puttering about setting my kitchen in order.
I was thinking about how it all started with the fish tank. I hesitated to set up a fish tank, even though I really, really wanted to.
Because I knew it would cost money and money is in short supply.
I did it anyway because I have finally learned that following my joy always leads to good things.
While I was setting it up, taking a bathroom break and scrolling marketplace, the Hoosier popped up. I'd been waiting for one to pop up in my price range, but the timing was bad. I was in the middle of a project, the price was right but it needed… (1/4)project, the price was right but it needed work, and furthermore, I was already spending money I didn't feel like I had.
I did it anyway. It was just too perfect. I dropped what I was doing, drove to Marion, loaded her up, and brought her home.
In the less than a month since then, I have:
* Set up a planted aquarium
* Repaired, cleaned, and refurbished the hoosier cabinet
* Deep cleaned and organized my kitchen
* Organized my bathroom (this was a small job, made possible by moving that wire rack into the bathroom)
Alongside all my usual things.
The kitchen has been a thorn in my side since we moved here, mostly because of that wire rack and how impossible it was to keep things organized and tidied.
Now it's beautiful and it makes me smile.
But I couldn't do it before. I just could not do it.
So all that, and then yesterday I saw a post (2/4)So all that, and then yesterday I saw a post by The Occuplaytional Therapist, about punishing autistic children by refusing to give them things until they have completed tasks. How it's like telling someone to build a tower with blocks before they're allowed to go get the blocks. You can't do it. You need the blocks.
And then that clicked into place with something I learned about dopamine from Alex Korb. Dopamine is not just a reward chemical. It's a MOTIVATION chemical.
Aha.
Aha aha aha.
The reason setting up my fish tank cascaded into all these other things is that I got massive dumps of dopamine from it.
Every step just ping ping ping dopamine dopamine dopamine.
Which gave me the courage and motivation to take on a bigger project when I saw the hoosier come available. And it was a big project. Under less dopamine-intensive conditions, it would have been an impossible series of executive function… (3/4)Impossible series or execuuve luncuon tasks that would have shut me down entirely.
But I did it, and I did it with joy and excitement.
And now I understand why.
Dopamine first.
Which is just a scientific way of saying what l've been feeling for the past three years: Lean into the joy.
Every time I choose to step forward into something that just freaking lights me up (hello, dopamine!), it cascades into more beautiful things and more beautiful things.
But our culture tells us from infancy that we're not allowed to have the nice things until AFTER we do the hard things.
But, y'all! That's backward!!!
You need the nice things to fuel the hard work.
Holy shit. (4/4)

The only thing i want to add here is a reminder that while folx with ADHD may not finish every project, we also *begin* way more projects than your average bear. Projects are great, but sometimes it’s more about our process, than it is about our product.

People say we abandon a lot of projects, but we *start* way more projects, too. And we don’t forget about the ones we move on from - they’re like experiments that didn’t work out. We file that knowledge away, and move on. #ADHD #HyperFocus #Neurodivergence (i forget stuff due to a non-adhd dx)

I struggle with learning how to do creative stuff because of my adhd. If a craft requires technical skills I need to practice to master, forget it. Like drawing or painting, no. I can't tolerate the length of the "you suck at this, actually" phase. I need stuff with quick access to proficiency.
