It’s important to remember that our models for motivation are all based on neurotypical neurology. Neurodivergents have a different process. So if you feel like you’re struggling for motivation, even to do things you like, give yourself a break. It’s not your fault were given the wrong handbook.

Aha!
Dopamine first.
That's the key.
Okay, hear me out.
Several things clicked into place for me yesterday as I was puttering about setting my kitchen in order.
I was thinking about how it all started with the fish tank. I hesitated to set up a fish tank, even though I really, really wanted to.
Because I knew it would cost money and money is in short supply.
I did it anyway because I have finally learned that following my joy always leads to good things.
While I was setting it up, taking a bathroom break and scrolling marketplace, the Hoosier popped up. I'd been waiting for one to pop up in my price range, but the timing was bad. I was in the middle of a project, the price was right but it needed… (1/4)project, the price was right but it needed work, and furthermore, I was already spending money I didn't feel like I had.
I did it anyway. It was just too perfect. I dropped what I was doing, drove to Marion, loaded her up, and brought her home.
In the less than a month since then, I have:
* Set up a planted aquarium
* Repaired, cleaned, and refurbished the hoosier cabinet
* Deep cleaned and organized my kitchen
* Organized my bathroom (this was a small job, made possible by moving that wire rack into the bathroom)
Alongside all my usual things.
The kitchen has been a thorn in my side since we moved here, mostly because of that wire rack and how impossible it was to keep things organized and tidied.
Now it's beautiful and it makes me smile.
But I couldn't do it before. I just could not do it.
So all that, and then yesterday I saw a post (2/4)So all that, and then yesterday I saw a post by The Occuplaytional Therapist, about punishing autistic children by refusing to give them things until they have completed tasks. How it's like telling someone to build a tower with blocks before they're allowed to go get the blocks. You can't do it. You need the blocks.
And then that clicked into place with something I learned about dopamine from Alex Korb. Dopamine is not just a reward chemical. It's a MOTIVATION chemical.
Aha.
Aha aha aha.
The reason setting up my fish tank cascaded into all these other things is that I got massive dumps of dopamine from it.
Every step just ping ping ping dopamine dopamine dopamine.
Which gave me the courage and motivation to take on a bigger project when I saw the hoosier come available. And it was a big project. Under less dopamine-intensive conditions, it would have been an impossible series of executive function… (3/4)Impossible series or execuuve luncuon tasks that would have shut me down entirely.
But I did it, and I did it with joy and excitement.
And now I understand why.
Dopamine first.
Which is just a scientific way of saying what l've been feeling for the past three years: Lean into the joy.
Every time I choose to step forward into something that just freaking lights me up (hello, dopamine!), it cascades into more beautiful things and more beautiful things.
But our culture tells us from infancy that we're not allowed to have the nice things until AFTER we do the hard things.
But, y'all! That's backward!!!
You need the nice things to fuel the hard work.
Holy shit. (4/4)

yeah the dopamine math just does not care about your five year plan. it wants the feeling NOW, logic can wait outside, thanks. took me way too long to realize that's not a willpower problem, it's just how the wiring bids on things

I don't have advice, but i relate strongly to this. I've tried telling myself that I can have fun doing things, even if I don't finish them. But it isn't helping so far. I still feel bad about all the half finished projects I have

People say we abandon a lot of projects, but we *start* way more projects, too. And we don’t forget about the ones we move on from - they’re like experiments that didn’t work out. We file that knowledge away, and move on. #ADHD #HyperFocus #Neurodivergence (i forget stuff due to a non-adhd dx)

I struggle with learning how to do creative stuff because of my adhd. If a craft requires technical skills I need to practice to master, forget it. Like drawing or painting, no. I can't tolerate the length of the "you suck at this, actually" phase. I need stuff with quick access to proficiency.

so much of what we learn and perpetuate is wrong and we have nervous systems that could work as error correcting but capitalism requires we ignore our feelings.

Something to keep in mind regarding AI. The people being deep faked (or whatever you want to call it) have families, and friends, and collaborators who did not consent to seeing them used like that. It’s never about one person. It’s about the community.

Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974) by Robert Pirsig is an example. Pirsig tells the story of a cross country motorcycle trip with his son. Daily maintenance of the motorcycle becomes their framework for philosophical discussions. Mechanics can be creatives; machines their medium.

A blank canvas is a problem. Or a blank page. Or an empty stage. But an illness is also a problem. Can healthcare professionals be creatives, too? Can medicine be approached as an art? If we’re talking about creative process, then the answer is YES. Virtually anything can be approached as an art!

If we take this perspective, then suddenly almost any activity can be viewed as an art. End product is not the only thing that matters; the process used to reach it is equally valuable. In fact, it’s often moreso. #Creativity can be thought of as the act of applying novel solutions to a problem.

Let’s talk a little about what an artistic/creative medium can be: We’ve all been introduced to the obvious arts, at least in concept, right? Painting. Writing. Drawing. Music. Dance. Sculpture. Theater. But some might argue it’s not the medium, but rather the artist’s approach that creates art.

Comfort is not a thing you can see.
It’s what you feel when watching Great Grandma already arranging the colour,
orange glass coals with their intricate cut lines
on her new three‑bar electric fire.
And when it wasn’t cold
she’d ask for only their glow
to be left on, above a red bulb
that Mum knew where to get replacements for, showing their old empty box.
It left me looking at waves of safe flames,
what I watched instead of a real
smoky, smouldering coal fire.
It’s board games on the carpet,
game shows on TV
when visitors sit gathered around her room,
or too‑sticky icing around a cherry
from a bakery bun.
It is not flower nor greeting card
but a separate generosity
where happiness lives in childhood rooms.
