I've just published my debut poetry collection for adults and I am giving it away for free online. Here's a poem from the book, below. I hawked it to some fancy magazines, but no luck. Very proud to self-publish it. Download the entire book here: archive.org/download/the... #BookSky #PoetryCommunity

#Poem #Poetry Ear to the Sky
This is the ear that listens
when we play
in the playground,

This is the ear that lifts
a tiny breath,
a giggle,
a laughing squeal,

This is the ear that follows
a sister on a swing
going up
and up
and higher,

This is the ear that spins
like a sister at the fair
in a rain‑lit dress
twirling past,

This is the ear that steadies
our mum’s voice
singing,
asking what’s up there
when we hold on
and look up,

This is the ear that keeps us
as the swing slows,
our legs loosened
in the air.

I was watching a video of writing tips by R. F. Kuang, the author of Babel, and she talked about writing physiology, for example when writing about triumph not only using words like elation and victory but telling what is happening to the character. #poem

#Poetry #Poem My poem is inspired by Jane Burns.
Red is the colour
of an urgency,
even an inner rising panic,
and I see
the fire‑engine career its answer.

Red is the colour of a persona,
and I see
the twist of the gold lipstick base
make its matte red bullet rise
for applying on lips,
pursed,
then gently pressed together
to even the colour on sharp features,
the classic red bandana,
a cotton square of paisley pattern and border on hair above.

Like red manicure shells catching light at an angle,
a front‑row flash
leaving her enduring impression.

Red is the colour trademark,
a diner‑fridge hallmark opening to its cherry topper,
a tourist’s comfort echoing jam at home
after picnic season ends.

Nervous for me on behalf of me,
I imagine she is, as I see my sister stand
at the edge of a circle I am about to lead.
She is in a mac of beige or black leather,
but it does not matter; I am not nervous anymore,
determined with a focus instead.
She is just in time to join us and pleasant songs
she hears in my voice for the first time.
She will praise me later for projecting my voice
as I perform them for learning, not only entertainment.
The self‑taught singer is, after all, her in our family.

I do not know how she learned to sing herself;
she had a microphone from a childhood karaoke set,
could raise money for charity, lead a musical, win a prize,
pursue a performing arts degree,
but I only saw the confidence on open mic on stage.

In Enzo’s Fish Bar
we sit at black seats at the low table in the window,
people passing with a good‑for‑you acknowledgement
as we eat chips from styrene trays
lined with paper.

I smile a small kindness at everyone,
including the gentleman, maybe in his fifties, smart, in thought,
who walks in, asks what fish is available now,
wanting what is ready,
not something he must wait for to take away,
and without hesitation
confides to the owner,
to his wife,
to us,
his illness.

Do you see how we find and gravitate
to a trusted setting of listeners.

Then he announces that today
he received the all‑clear from cancer.
Take care, the staff say as he leaves.
You would never have known
the day he was already having
until he told us.

It is a good day
when Mum sits with us
in the tea rooms,
accepting a treat of lunch:
a sirloin beef sandwich
on wholemeal bread,
mustard and horseradish,
salad and garnish.

She doesn’t fold it
into serviettes
for the cats later.
She doesn’t urge us
to finish more
from our plates
so she won’t refuse
a helping left to waste.
She doesn’t stay satisfied
with making her latte last.

She just tucks
into the tastiness,
no swiping at wifi screens,
no bickering,
no rushing.

Different Glitter
by Kay Medway, after Hilda Conkling

Contentment is not a thing you can see.
It is what you feel
when fudge‑orange edge, rock‑pink crescent moon‑shape earrings,
only moon in shape, carnival in colour,
piñata‑bright in their texture,
still sit from ears above your shoulder
and flutter in a wind on the way home
after a long day,
blue barrows, rainbow canopies, lemonade,
or a book open on a favourite page of a poem.
It is neither shard of seaglass nor fragment silver of disco ball,
but a different glitter.
Contentment rises from winding riv

The Radio That Evening

Mariah had been unwell in the news that summer.
Pink‑purple website media furore, tabloid and TV.

But on September 11th,
Northants 96.6 FM was already speaking tributes
in the low, continuous way
of the lost,
their families,
the first responders,
the unnamed heroes of New York.

I came home from the new school.
Thirteen.
No teacher had broached us with a word.
No phones then
to carry the bombardment of world news
even on an ordinary day.

Just the radio,
its steady voice,
my schoolbag still by the door,
and her song “Hero,”
the one people turned to.

On a summer taxi ride from Hobbycraft to home,
the radio host wished good luck to the young—
modern foreign languages GCSE day.

The driver listened, as did we, while he was at the wheel.
Maybe English was a second language of someone here.
Maybe someone in a car carried millions of beautiful ways
to speak with care to others in other tongues.

I felt a quiet pride
in this shared, communicating world,
this small broadcast of language and hope.

Thank you to the driver,
for choosing a station that felt kindly to listen to.

Thank you to the radio host,
for sending what was positive into your show.
Thank you to the teachers and the students,
for the commitment to all learning.

#poem #poetry #Halloween purple as a bruised potion, pink as the sole of a kitten‑tongue‑like witch’s cracked leather slipper, red as a forbidden ember, black as beetles, even under an abandoned cloak.
The Closed Haunted Little Free Library by Kay Medway

If Halloween is cancelled, they'll announce that even the littlest Little Free Library,
          a haunted edition, is closed
because they'll repeat that Halloween is cancelled.

Other times it is an all‑year‑round black bat habitat
          but for books,
                    a coffin‑case of stories
behind glass cracked into spider‑web lines.

It’s a crooked roof, a contraption under a sky roof of black,
          that keeps the spookiest zines
drier than the shrunken leaves through rain,
          and when Halloween is cancelled,
they will be in there,
but bolted by a broken broom‑stick handle shut.

But they can't hide the book spines:
stern, straight, with a gloss and purple as a bruised potion,
pink as the sole of a kitten‑tongue‑like witch’s cracked leather slipper,
          red as a forbidden ember,
black as beetles, even under an abandoned cloak.

POETRY FOUNDATION

The Mower
BY PHILIP LARKIN

The mower stalled, twice; kneeling, I found
A hedgehog jammed up against the blades,
Killed. It had been in the long grass.

I had seen it before, and even fed it, once.
Now I had mauled its unobtrusive world
Unmendably. Burial was no help:

Next morning I got up and it did not.
The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful

Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

Won’t Go Down Without a Fight
It is neither bruise colours nor anything thrown in or held up;
it could be one of gentler stuff,
it keeps heading nearer,
there’s no dark outline of any lone opponent involved.
It isn’t a sack for you to make contact with;
it’s more wicket than anything built to take a hit.
More on the slopes,
it’s more paperweight than any title,
it’s more gift‑giving day than anything you’d call a sport.

It is easy to dream down the wilderness path at twelve
          with grandparents and cousins,
and Mum before Grandma, who now, naturally, bless her,
          may quibble about the distance
because of age.

I walk it anyway.
My memory is of hearing their advice,
thinking of the interview for a scholarship
          to a grammar school,
hoping I might stand out.

Granddad's memory is of walking along the road
          near his village,
when I was just a little younger.

We found horsetail plants in England,
forerunners, he said, of our trees today,
eighty feet tall in the days of dinosaurs.

I told a teacher,
and she remembered I had told her,
but she said it was impossible
for them to reach such growth.
