@heynavtoor
🚨BREAKING: OpenAI published a paper proving that ChatGPT will always make things up.

Not sometimes. Not until the next update. Always. They proved it with math.

Even with perfect training data and unlimited computing power, AI models will still confidently tell you things that are completely false. This isn't a bug they're working on. It's baked into how these systems work at a fundamental level.

And their own numbers are brutal. OpenAI's o1 reasoning model hallucinates 16% of the time. Their newer o3 model? 33%. Their newest o4-mini? 48%. Nearly half of what their most recent model tells you could be fabricated. The "smarter" models are actually getting worse at telling the truth. Here's why it can't be fixed. Language models work by predicting the next word based on probability. When they hit something uncertain, they don't pause. They don't flag it. They guess. And they guess with complete confidence, because that's exactly what they were trained to do.

The researchers looked at the 10 biggest AI benchmarks used to measure how good these models are. 9 out of 10 give the same score for saying "I don't know" as for giving a completely wrong answer: zero points. The entire testing system literally punishes honesty and rewards guessing.

So the AI learned the optimal strategy: always guess. Never admit uncertainty. Sound confident even when you're making it up.

OpenAI's proposed fix? Have ChatGPT say "I don't know" when it's unsure. Their own math shows this would mean roughly 30% of your questions get no answer. Imagine asking ChatGPT something three times out of ten and getting "I'm not confident enough to respond." Users would leave overnight. So the fix exists, but it would kill the product. This isn't just OpenAI's problem. DeepMind and Tsinghua University independently reached the same conclusion. Three of the world's top AI labs, working separately, all agree: this is permanent.

Every time ChatGPT gives you an answer, ask yourself: is this real, or is it just a confident guess?

Catastrophic higher education news in New Brunswick: the Liberal government of my MLA @susanholtnb.bsky.social is potentially going to cut 10% of the budget for universities—$50M across 4 schools when much *more* funding is needed, not less. The impact would be devastating. Please share, NBers.
*Important*

At the Senate on Tuesday, the President summarized the Province's plan to cut University funding across the province by 10%. This is nuclear, amounting to ~50M divided among the four universities. (While Irving pulp and paper is to get +45M for tariff relief.)

But it is not yet a done deal. All university and union presidents are responding firmly.

Please write to your MLA asap. There is not much time.Dear Hon. Susan Holt,

It has come to my attention that the budget for universities in the province may be cut by $50 million.

I am writing to plead with you to reconsider.

New Brunswick universities like the University of New Brunswick--recently ranked tops in Atlantic Canada and 14th in the country ahead of Western and Ottawa by TIME Magazine--serve a vital role educating the young people of this province.

Our constituency is our own children.

These proposed cuts would have a catastrophic impact on institutions that quite frankly require more public investment not less. This would be an incredibly short-sighted decision, with devastating long-term impacts.

I hope New Brunswick can count on you to reconsider and put its young people first, ahead of corporate interests.

Many thanks,

Nathan Kalman-Lamb

This guy is invited to speak at various separatist and far right conferences and events.

This is the kind of rank ugliness being amped up and legitimized by the separatist movement.

Taken from an Alberta NDP email. #abpoli #teachersstrike
A graph that shows student enrollment and per-student funding over time in the province of Alberta. The time axis is divided into parties that formed the provincial government, and the Education Ministers are listed chronologically. The chart shows a far higher funding commitment under the Alberta NDP than either the previous Progressive Conservatives or current United Conservatives, but the precipitous drop under the current UCP is shocking. The email from which the chart comes says: "From the start, Alberta’s New Democrats funded education per student above the national average while in government. In fact, those figures are still higher today than what the UCP funds now, almost a decade later–including inflation."

From Teacher Britt Booth

I am an Alberta teacher. Like the majority of Albertans, I didn't vote orange. I'm a good old farm girl from a blue collar family in a small town with one traffic light and I have more perspectives in common with people from both sides of the political spectrum than either side would guess. I respect and agree with Danielle Smith's stance on certain topics - education notwithstanding.
I am a specialist teacher. I have two degrees, including a Bachelor of Music. I taught middle school choir for over a decade; it was my passion and the reason I became a teacher. I always picked up the odd humanities class to help balance the timetable because I have double minors in English and Social Sciences. I never minded it, but now I teach humanities almost exclusively. As with so many schools in Alberta, we had our funding reduced this year which meant a reduction in teaching positions at our school, which means reduced option classes and those option teachers had to pick up core classes instead of their specialties.Demand for my program was never a problem. In fact, my choir numbers were the biggest they had ever been in my entire career and my program was robust, beloved, and the highlight of the middle school experience for so many students. Now the piano collects dust in a storage room and the choral library I curated for years sits in a forgotten cupboard. And the kids who loved that program because it was their safe space where they felt competent and confident?
Heartbroken and disconnected.
I've also taught sewing for 8 years.
My classes have always been capped at 24 students because of space, safety, and equipment constraints.
With the reduction in funding we took last year, it meant fewer teachers and larger classes. Now I have classes of 29 students - with 16 sewing machines. I've had to reduce the number of skills I teach them because Ijust cannot safely supervise that many middle-schoolers while they use potentially dangerous equipment, like rotary cutters. To keep the students safe and prevent injury or damage to equipment and materials, l do most of the rotary cutting for them
- outside of my contract hours, of course. And my core classes? Last year nearly broke me. We lost our ESL classroom, so all of the English-learning students landed in my room. In one class I had five kids with three different languages between them, some of whom were illiterate in their native language so I couldn't even run things through a translating program for them, and no EA support. Oh, and 30 other 8th graders in the same class that I had to teach curriculum to while also somehow teaching English at a pre-school level, and 11 of those kids had individual support and/or behaviour plans, many of them reading three or more grades below grade level. Someone please tell me how I could have possibly succeeded
- because I know I didn't and it ripped me apart.
I failed the ESL kids, because I couldn't sit with them and teach them English, they couldn't read any independent workbook resources I made for them, so they were bored and disengaged and often became behaviour problems instead. The kids who needed ISP accommodations and extra support to be successful? I worked tirelessly, but there was never enough of me to go around and no one else to help them instead. The government is doing everything they can to villainize teachers and pit parents against us. These 3000 new teachers they're promising? That is approximately the number they knew they'd have to hire anyways to staff the new schools they had already announced and to keep up with projected enrolment. It's like if your kids needed new socks in March because theirs were all worn out, so you waited until December to buy new ones and then wrapped them up in pretty paper- and then wondered why the kids were sad when they realized those were the only presents under the tree for them.
Parents, we aren't preparing to strike because we're greedy. If this were just about salary, we would have voted to accept the deal we were offered in May. We're doing this because we care about YOUR kids.

They deserve more. They deserve to be supported, to learn in classrooms that aren't stuffed to the gills with 37 sweaty, pubescent teenagers after gym class. They deserve to have the accommodations they need to succeed. They deserve to have option classes that teach them lifelong skills and give them a creative outlet and a place to belong. They deserve to have energized, enthusiastic teachers who have the bandwidth to give them the individual attention they need.

This is what we want for your kids. We need you to demand it from this government. You demand it, and we promise we'll do everything in our power to make it a reality. We love your kids and want the best for them too.

You have my permission to share this.

It's time for parents and teachers to come together and demand better.
