Have been thinking lately how low the Overton Window has edged in NZ (the Overton Ranch Slider?). Shit like this suggests the US is already glazing the basement

As for me and the kids, we've enjoyed our overnight expedition to see the penguins, total return transport costs: $12! (zone based fares coming in November)

Grateful for everyone who came out tonight in Ōtepoti to help launch OFFSHORE SERVICE. My brother from the wrong island was a surprise attendee. John from Paper Plus was busy on the book sales table. And Hera Lindsay Bird's launch speech did NOT disappoint! 🥹
Craig Cliff stands at a lecturn in the Dunningham Suite at Dunedin City Library, about to give a reading from OFFSHORE SERVICE & OTHER STORIES. To his left sits Hera Lindsay Bird and Sue Wootton (OUP). Part of the front row of the audience is also visible.

I think we should start measuring government programmes in Hayden Donnell's 'metres of roading'. Lowering the age of bowel cancer screening to 45? 5 metres of road. A year of Three Waters? 63 metres of road. Reading recovery? 13mm of road.

Read news NBA player Brandon Clarke (29) died before I boarded plane to Auckland. Then guy in window seat said empty seat next to him was his mate's, but he'd recently died. Spent the non-wifi hours wondering who #3 would be. Turns out it was Jason Collins, NBA's 1st openly gay NBA player. Fuck. 🙏🙏🙏

Wemby: “I refuse to carry the burden of having to hide my emotions.” This is amazing.

"Wemby's too emotional." "Wemby should stop crying." "Wemby's gay."
Can we stop with the tired old clichés that treat emotions as a weakness, either in sports or in life in general?
I asked Wemby about why that is. Here's his response:
"That's a tough question. I think it's first and foremost a fear of judgment. Like this feeling that you have to act a certain way, social codes, I guess. Personally, I refuse to carry the burden of having to hide my emotions."

Not quite as bad as it looks: this is part of 3-day user testing of prototypes
Screenshot of email that reads: "Dunedin – signage user testing

From 28-30 April, you may see representatives from Dotdash (the University’s signage consultant) and the project team carrying out a signage user testing exercise on the Dunedin campus.

Dotdash will be installing some temporary prototype signs to test their design and clarity in a real campus setting. As part of this, the team may approach people with a few quick questions about how clear or helpful the signs are as they move around campus. Participation is entirely optional.

This work supports the development of updated University-wide Signage Guidelines that align with our visual identity. Feedback gathered during this visit will help make sure future signage is clear, consistent and works well for staff, students and visitors."

Many people reckon Simeon Brown should have asked more questions about the risks of his mandatory higher speed limits in neighbourhoods, around schools & on dangerous highways — evidence that was readily available to him at the time, and that continues to accumulate in the form of injuries & deaths.

Great launch for Breton Dukes' new novel PARTY BOY at Woof! featuring songs from the Broken Heartbreakers (one named after the book), nice words (incl. from editor Lawrence Patchett, pictured) and a peppering of awkwardness and peril the befits the book.

This is what I expected from the government, but it's incredibly disappointing that Autism New Zealand should go along with it. We need to make "regular" schools cater to neurodivergent students — which will benefit everyone! — not segregate difference.

#53-56 Highlight from this bunch: The Proof of My Innocence
The Forgotten Forest by Robert Vennell. Screenshot from the Libby app. Probably better as an illustration physical book, or a guided meditation. Playworld by Adam Ross. Screenshot from the Libby app. Felt like a novel written by someone immersed in the college creative writing industrial machine who takes a long time between books. Oh wait... The Proof of My Innocence by Jonathan Coe. Screenshot from the Libby app. I read lots of Coe around the time of Like a Fiery Elephant and The Rotters Club. Nice to see him still punning with structure and tackling the Liz Truss era.The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon. Screenshot from the Libby app. Note to audiobook producers: when you have an hourlong foreword, it helps to let the listener know who wrote the foreword at the beginning rather than the end (Reader, it was Satre).

Photo of physical book. How to Hold a Cockroach: a book for those who are free and don't know it. Still don't know if Maxwell has even read Kafka (seems unlikely).Universality by Natasha Brown. Screenshot of audiobook in the Libby app. Loved Assembly. This one felt like a long book that had been compressed to the point it loses all fidelity.
