Repeat after me: 1) PIP isn't an out of work benefit. It is a benefit paid to disabled people to pay for the extra costs of living with a disability. 2) Some PIP claimants work. Some PIP claimants will never able to work at all. 3) Impoverishing people doesn't get them closer to employment

The Imperial Garden, Japan. Photography by chee hian on Flickr
Captured by photographer chee hian, this vertical composition portrays a woman seen from behind, standing in contemplation beneath weeping cherry blossoms (shidarezakura) within the Imperial Palace Gardens. She wears a traditional kimono featuring a red-and-white ichimatsu (checkered) pattern overlaid with pink cherry blossom motifs. Tied securely at her back is a rich red obi woven with golden and pink floral crests. Her hair is styled in an elegant updo, accented with delicate hanging kanzashi hair ornaments. Cascading down from the upper right, the slender branches of weeping cherry trees burst into soft pink blossoms, creating a natural floral canopy against the dark trunks of mature pine trees. The quiet, mossy earth of the garden floor stretches into the soft-focus background.
Kyoto Imperial Palace Garden (Kyōto Gyoen) and Tokyo's Imperial Palace East Gardens (Kōkyo Higashi Gyoen) have served for centuries as imperial grounds, meticulously maintained to reflect seasonal transitions. The tradition of hanami (cherry blossom viewing) dates back to the Nara and Heian periods, initially practiced by the imperial court before spreading throughout Japanese society. The figure's attire exemplifies traditional textile arts (monozukuri). The ichimatsu checkered pattern, popularized in the Edo period by Kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu I, combines here with sakura motifs to create an auspicious seasonal ensemble.

📱 | Northern Minnesota (2024) Steeped in morning mist #WeekOForOpaque #AlphabetChallenge
Square photograph showing a mist-shrouded lake at dawn, framed by dark pine foliage in the lower corners. Across the top, a sharp band of burnt orange and cadmium yellow sky sits behind a dark silhouette of tall pines, while the center dissolves into a thick veil of cool grey and muted mauve fog that obscures soft, vertical tree reflections on the water's surface. Below, the mist transitions into light washes of pale rose and lavender where water and air blur together, creating a composition anchored by the strong horizontal tree line and balanced by diagonal foreground branches—a visual narrative of the brief pause at daybreak before warmth displaces the cool morning vapor.

Korin-in, Kyo Shino, Daitokuji Temple Built as a family temple of the Hatakeyama family. Kyoto, Japan. Photography by Katsu
Captured by photographer Katsu at Kōrin-in (興臨院)—a prominent sub-temple of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto—this breathtaking scene showcases autumn maple foliage (momiji) framed dramatically by traditional sliding wooden doors (shōji or amado). The fiery red leaves of the maple tree create a dazzling canopy outside, which is mirrored in a vivid, glassy reflection across a highly polished black floor or table inside the temple hall. A low, natural bamboo fence (yotsume-gaki) and delicate ornamental grasses (pampas grass) run along the garden boundary in the mid-ground, providing an earthy anchor between the blazing canopy above and its mirrored twin below.
ōrin-in was established in the 1520s during the Muromachi period by Hatakeyama Yoshitaka, daimyō of Noto Province, to serve as the family temple (bodaiji) for the Hatakeyama clan. Following the fall of the Hatakeyama, the famed warlord Maeda Toshiie of the Kaga Domain restored and sponsored the temple, establishing a lasting historical link with the Maeda clan. The main hall (Hondō) and its grand entrance gate (Karamon) are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, showcasing classic Muromachi-style Zen architectural design.

The garden and architectural framing embody the traditional design principle of shakkei (borrowed scenery), where nature and timber architecture are seamlessly integrated. This spatial harmony represents the highest standard of Japanese monozukuri—the master craftsmanship of temple carpentry and landscape design created in service of contemplative Zen practice.
