the owner of this website makes me so unusually annoyed. i do not understand how he so consistently fucks up such a good and simple thing. why is there a giant bar on the left taking up half the screen. no one requires this information! he completely ruined the game library page. justso incompetent

i don't understand how they fucked up something as easy as backloggd. site owner got massively lucky that ppl flocked to his site during pandemic. every (literally every) decision made has been a poor one and i say this as someone who genuinely likes the site and finds it useful for lists

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

vladikcomper on the SGDK discord has created an amazing and ridiculous mod for Sonic the Hedgehog (MD) in which quality degrades to different resolutions/numbers of colors unless you fill your blast processing meter up. It works real time in wide screen in a smaller rom size than the original game.

Trump declaring an "energy emergency," aggregating more powers to himself so as to ram through unnecessary & deadly fossil-fuel development, is all the more infuriating becuz the Dems have refused to declare a climate emergency, leaving the space wide open for occupation by authoritarian interests.

If there's anything I hope young creatives take from David Lynch, it's to reject the modern IP-driven impulse to explicitly explain and cleanly categorize the logic behind every single event and decision inside and outside of a story at least some of the time.

it's past time for a lot of people, esp in the left media commentary sphere, to give up on this idea of speaking to a broader audience that never seems to actually materialize and operate within the people who actually care and engage with what you do.

A big challenge for games history for the next 10 years will be decentering both the "Indie Darling" histories and AAA console histories, as consoles (hopefully) become less relevant and we realize conversations shouldn't be dominated by which indie or AAA game sold 5,000,000 copies

I really do believe AI is inherently fascist. Both the resources it takes to generate and the soullessness of its output render it entirely irredeemable, but it also hollows out any meaning we can get from communication and art and reduces human life to an aesthetic it wears like a skinsuit.

went and wrote about gameplay loops :) blog.joeyschutz.com/the-case-aga...
screenshot of a paragraph from the blog, which reads: The whole premise of the core loop game is to figure out a thing you can do for hours and hours. Refine that mechanic until it’s something broad enough and bendable enough, without specificity, to be deployed in a thousand different contexts. And then you go and make a lot of stuff with it. It’s a harsh delineation between the form (the mechanics) and the content (what you do). And usually it leaves me feeling unmoved. Usually it leaves me feeling like neither has much of a purpose. The content is there to justify the mechanics, and the mechanics are there to give you something to do with the content...and we never make anything with a real purpose. What is any of this for?

youtube video essays are not a substitute for written work, and shouldn't be made to be one. the idea that everyone should have to be on youtube and dealing with the strange social dynamics of that space and weird impenetrable algorithms of that platform is a huge part of the problem

in the case of BL i do not blame the kids, they've been fed bad information for decades whereas reality dictates gngs fundamental importance to sidescrolling games. smb1 is its counterpoint: prioritizing articulate movement over encounter design. both key! and spartan x/pacland as precursors.

fyi its well acknowledged by the creator of castlevania that it was konami's take on ghosts n' goblins. right down to the subweapons, 6 stages w/ 2 blocks and a map that represents progress. gng has vertical/horizontal scrolling, multiple stage BGM, more complex enemy patterns than smb1

100 Japan-exclusive PS1 gems! In 2018, I browsed the entire list of the console's releases. In 2021, I described my favorites in a twitter thread. Today, it's time to move this thread to Bluesky before deleting my twitter account.
The cover of a PS1 game called Dig a-dig Pukka. In the bottom right corner, a yellow fox with a green hat smiles at us, a pickaxe in its hands and a crystal before it. The rest of the image is filled with an abundant mass of green leaves. The title is in the upper center. The cover of a PS1 game called Doki Oki. Two dogu-shaped aliens are looking at the title, and one is pointing at it. In the background, a surreal landscape is topped by a surreal building. The sky is blue. The cover of a PS1 game called Meremanoid. A golden mermaid is playing a dragon-shaped harp. Behind her is a round-shaped window showing a green-colored underwater seascape. The rest of the image is white and the title is on the bottom right. The cover of a PS1 game called Planet Laika. The image is cut twice vertically and its pieces are misaligned. It shows a toy rocket ship over a blue to black background. The title is on the bottom center. I am really sorry, but since there are over 400 images in this thread, the rest of it will not have any alt text. For each skeet, the images will consist of the mentioned game's cover and 3 screenshots.
