Riton in lapislazuli e oro
Collection: Abegg-Stiftung - Achemenid Persia • 5th century
BC
Carved in the deep blue of lapislazzuli and adorned with gold details, this rhyton takes on the form of a powerful caprid, depicted in a collected pose as the body of the vase rises behind its shoulders. The contrast between the intense stone and the luster of gold returns an object of extraordinary elegance, designed to combine ritual function and strong visual impact.
Rhyta like this were used during libations and ceremonial banquets in the royal courts of ancient Persia. The gesture of pouring and drinking became part of a symbolic choreography, in which the vessel was not just a container, but a means between the earthly power, the sacred and the natural world. The animal form indicated strength, protection and fertility, central values in the Persian imaginary.
In the Achemenian period (around 550-330 BC), luxury objects played a fundamental role in the representation of imperial power. Precious materials like lapislazzuli - imported from far-flung regions of Central Asia - and gold underscored the empire's breadth and control of trade routes. Rhyta were employed in elite ritual contexts or offered as diplomatic gifts, strengthening hierarchies, alliances and the divine legitimacy of the sovereign.

Three thousand years ago, a Greek potter looked at a bowl and thought: ‘You know what this needs? A leg!’ Clay bowl with leg-shaped handle!🦵😆 Early Geometric period 850 BC. Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Greek pottery bowl with a rounded, deep body, wide open mouth and flared rim. It has a large handle shaped like a human leg, extending from the left side of the bowl in my photo, bending at a right angle and ending in a flat foot. The bowl has a camel-coloured surface decorated with dark brown geometric patterns, which include zigzags and meander motifs arranged in horizontal bands around the body of the bowl and along the leg. From Attica, Early Geometric period, circa 850 BC. It sits on a light stone coloured surface in a display case at the Altes Museum in Berlin.

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.

A roar of loneliness. For #ReliefWednesday, this beautiful late C4 BCE Etruscan terracotta askos. Its deeply modelled mane echoes the frescoes of the François Tomb where it was found. The tomb's dispersion proves that scattering a collection destroys its context. #AncientBluesky 🏺
ZOOMORPHIC LION ASKOS FROM THE FRANÇOIS TOMB, LATE C4 BCE. VILLA GIULIA, ROME

A terracotta vessel shaped like a crouching and snarling lion, resting on a narrow black-glazed base decorated with a wavy pattern. The surface combines painted and heavily modelled relief-like decoration, featuring deep tongue-shaped locks forming the mane and short hatched brown brushstrokes indicating the hide. The open mouth ingeniously serves as a secondary pouring spout. Discovered in 1857 in Vulci, this beautiful object is currently on loan from the British Museum, serving as a stark reminder of the tragic dispersion of the grave goods of the François Tomb. While the famous C4 BCE frescoes were stripped from the tufo walls, objects like this askos were scattered through sales to foreign collectors and institutions. This permanent dismemberment of a unified context is the curse of Italian cultural patrimony. It mirrors the fate of medieval polyptychs broken into isolated panels, Roman mosaics ripped from their architectural settings, monastery libraries sold off piecemeal, and intact family archives pillaged for individual gain. When private greed triumphs over the public good, the original meaning of these masterpieces is gravely diminished and the connective tissue of our history is lost.

Ancient Greek cup in the shape of a cow’s hoof! 🐮❤️ A novelty wine cup from some 2,500 years ago! The Met 📷 by me www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti... #Archaeology
My photo shows an Attic terracotta red-figure drinking cup. The lower part of the cup is in the shape of a cow's hoof coloured orangey-red with faint vertical black brush strokes. There is a wider black line down the front of the hoof which may represent a cow’s cloven hoof The upper part of the cup is cylindrical with a single black handle and outsplayed rim. It is painted with a detailed landscape scene depicting a seated herdsman, with two cows, a dog and a hare. The figures are orangey-red against a black sip background. My photo shows the side of the cup depicting the herdsman and one of the cows. The herdsman wears shoes, a cap, and a cloak of fur or hide. Height of cup 10.3 cm. The cup is attributed to a painter recalling the Brygos Painter

The Kroisos Kouros, an ancient Greek marble statue from the Archaic period.
It is dated to around 530 BC and was found in Anavyssos, Attica.
The life-sized statue served as a grave marker for a young warrior named Kroisos.
It features the rigid stance and stylized "Archaic smile" typical of the era.
It is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
Over thousands of years, exposure to elements, burial, and harsh cleaning faded the vibrant colors, leaving behind the bare, weathered marble seen today. However, microscopic analysis and close inspection reveal crucial details about its original appearance.
Faint remnants of red pigment are still visible on the statue, particularly in the hair and the eyes.
The intricately braided hair was coated in dark tones or red underpainting, which some scholars believe may have originally been covered with gold leaf to give it a brilliant, heroic shine.
Colors were used to pick out specific features such as the lips, eyes, and nipples to make the figure feel more present and lifelike.
While mainland kouroi like this one have less surviving skin pigment, contemporary statues from other Greek regions show traces of dark, reddish-brown paint used to represent a healthy, athletic sun-tan.
In antiquity, the cemeteries and sanctuaries where these statues stood would have been filled with vivid, intensely colorful figures rather than the austere white galleries we see in museums today.

Mycenaean warrior from the middle of the 12th millennium BC (Description in alt-text) #bronzeage #ancienthistory
Reconstruction based on a number of findings from sites on the upper Vardar river. These are mainly imports from the Mycenaean world further south, which had made their way into the rich burials of the Ulanci group. This archaeological group of the Bronze Age dates to the middle of the 2nd millennium BC to 1.200 BC, where a layer of destruction in the settlements indicates the violent end of that culture, with only few settlements surviving.
You can read about it when googling „Ulanci“ from Maptism (since insta is weird about links in the description):
https://x.com/Maptysk/status/2062930208894664769?s=20

The reconstruction includes the helmet from Hippodrom at Skopje, the rapier-type sword from Tetovo, a marble sword pommel from Markova Sushica (Zlatko Videski, The grave from Markova Susica (2022)), a toilet set from grave 129 of Dimov Grob (Ulanci culture), as well as a warrior stele from grave 32 of the same necropolis (Videski, Dimov Grob (2022)) and an inspiration for the cloak from the „Shipwreck scene“ of the wall painting at Thera (West House, Room 5), because it seemed sensible to me that the quite large pins from Dimov Grob would hold together rather larger cloaks.
It was later brought to my attention that the „cloak“ from the wall painting is usually interpreted as a cow-hide tower shield instead of a cool stiff cloak 👀 (though animal skins and hides were used in various cultures for clothing and cloaks, too, but this may be one of the more speculative parts of the reconstruction…)

Master and Commander. For #SarcophagusSaturday, tracing #Roman power to #Etruscan roots. Authority was codified in #Etruria even before the Republic. This #Cerveteri #sarcophagus shows a magistrate's procession: chariots, musicians, mantles, and the lituus. #AncientBluesky 🏺 🧵
SARCOPHAGUS OF A MAGISTRATE, 375-350 BCE. MUSEO GREGORIANO ETRUSCO

An Etruscan sarcophagus from Cerveteri, carved from imported Circeo marble for added prestige, and retaining traces of brilliant red pigment. The lid features the recumbent effigy of a bearded male magistrate resting on a carved cushion, his left hand holding a patera upon his stomach. The chest panel is decorated with a bas-relief frieze depicting a formal procession. From the left, an attendant guides a horse-drawn chariot, the visual ancestor of the Roman triumph. This is followed by a procession of figures wrapped in heavy ceremonial mantles called tebennas, the direct precursor to the Roman toga. These include musicians playing a double flute and a lyre, later essential for Roman state sacrifices, and civic officials carrying symbols of authority like the curved staff known as a lituus. This iconography forms the direct visual vocabulary of power that the Romans adopted for their own civic magistracies.

An ancient Greek silver coin depicting a bee! 🐝 😍 Minted in Ephesus, 390-380 BC. Photo Getty Museum #Archaeology
A Getty Museum photo showing a silver tetradrachm (four-drachma coin) stamped in high relief on the obverse of the coin with a bee viewed from above, within a dotted border. It is dark grey silver against a lighter grey background. Relief details include legs, wings, antennae, segmented abdomen and sting. The Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), an abbreviation for ‘Ephesus’, are placed either side of the bee. Diameter 7 mm.

From the museum catalogue:
“The reverse shows the foreparts of a stag kneeling in right profile, looking back towards a palm tree. An inscription to the right reads ΚΑΡΝΩ[Ψ] (‘KARNO[PS]’).
The bee, stag, and palm are all emblems of Ephesus, a Greek city on the west coast of Turkey. This city was an important center of worship for the Greek goddess Artemis, and the images on Ephesian coinage typically promote this association. The bee was originally the symbol of an early Anatolian goddess who the Greeks later identified with their goddess, Artemis; so close was the connection that the priestesses of the goddess were called "honey bees." The two Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), are an abbreviation for Ephesus. The palm tree alludes to Artemis' birth beneath a palm tree on the island of Delos. The stag – an animal sacred to Artemis – symbolizes the goddess' role as protector of wild animals, and may also refer to the sculptures that flanked her cult statue in the temple at Ephesus”
