STANLEY KUBRICK’S THE SHINING, J.W. Rinzler Taschen, 2024 Possibly the last word on Stanley Kubrick’s classic film. Exhaustively researched, full of facts, anecdotes, and images never before seen. It’s a ginormous book, but an absolutely rewarding one, especially for Kubrick fans (and fanatics). 💙📚

KEMBERTON, David Moody Infected Books, 2026 As disturbing a book as I’ve ever read. David Moody is an absolute maestro of bleak. HUGE trigger warnings for violence and abuse. Family drama at its most dysfunctional, gore at its bloodiest, nihilism at its finest. Take that how you will. 💙📚

THE HAMMER HORROR OMNIBUS, John Burke Titan Books, 1966/2026 Re-release of 4 novellas based on 1960s horror films from Hammer Studios (most with Peter Cushing and/or Christopher Lee). Better than expected from their brevity, but they do serve to highlight how flimsy some Hammer plots were. 💙📚

THIS DARK EARTH, John Hornor Jacobs Gallery Books, 2012 Zombies everywhere! An intimate epic on the end of everything, chock full of everything you want in a zombie novel: paranoia, nihilism, body parts, survival drama, and (as previously noted) zombies everywhere! 💙📚

CARNOSAUR, Harry Adam Knight Valancourt Books, 2022 (1984) A pulpy, British Dino-thriller that beat Jurassic Park to the punch by over half a decade. Its grasp of actual science borders on the nonexistent, but it’s a fun, fast, gory tale that warmed my heart. 💙📚

ARMAGEDDON, THE MUSICAL, Robert Rankin Corgi, 1991 Rankin’s comedic writing is rather an acquired taste. One of his quintessential works, this is laden with puns, whimsy, digressions, and general weirdness. You’re either in the mood for it, or you’re not. Turns out, I was fully in. 💙📚

QUINT, Robert Lautner The Borough Press, 2025 Intriguing reimagining of one of pop culture’s most famous fishermen. It’s not as fully gripping as JAWS is (either book or movie), but there’s a lot of good here, transforming Quint from a mysterious cipher to a fully-formed personality. 💙📚

IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, Sutter Kane (Christian Francis) Echo On Publications, 2025 Fairly effective novelization of the classic late-era John Carpenter film. Frankly, I’d rather have the real book the fictional Sutter Kane was writing in the movie, but this will have to do. 💙📚 🎥

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Very probably the best photo I've ever taken of a 16th Century dovecote with a cow standing in front of it, surrounded by buttercups, looking like she has just dropped a debut album she is thoroughly proud of.
A cow, standing in front of the dovecote in Bruton, Somerset, about a month ago. Lovely town. Beautiful architecture. Had a chat with a really nice lady from an old farming family after I took this. Sadly quite a few stuck-up down-from-London snotbags live there these days and houses cost a fortune as a result.
