We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.

There is no gray area on Scrooge. He is the most explicitly caricatured figure in all of Dickens. A Sistine Chapel level finely filigreed precise depiction of every miserly trait boiled down to an aromatic reduction. A Platonic ideal of the form.

As we start a new year, it's really important that we believe that students have something worth saying, that we make space for them to say it, and that we develop classroom communities where students can listen to one another and sound themselves out. This is a time for stances, not terminal irony.

An anguished Toad jumps up and down, beating his brow in desperate fury while Frog looks on, dismayed.

Adaptation across media is brilliant for highlighting the kinds of choices made in and for the original media form. Film adaptations are wonderful for this and can make clear the shocking complexity of initiating human imagination via squiggly lines on paper.

Been thinking about this a lot: From 1995 to 2021, the ratio of students to *principals* in U.S. public schools decreased by 31.7%. The ratio fell even further for district-level admins: 34.8%. But for teachers, the decrease was only 11.5% & the ratio of students to librarians increased by 41.7%.
