increasingly I think it's not useful to tell students to prove their points with quotes, as if quotation is self-evident instead, they have to shift to prove the quotes with their points

How to disable or avoid intrusive AI
One of the biggest questions I get at Drop-In Time at the library (besides "what is taking up all my cloud storage?") is how to disable or avoid intrusive AI that shows up where people don't want it. ...

We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.

There is no gray area on Scrooge. He is the most explicitly caricatured figure in all of Dickens. A Sistine Chapel level finely filigreed precise depiction of every miserly trait boiled down to an aromatic reduction. A Platonic ideal of the form.

As we start a new year, it's really important that we believe that students have something worth saying, that we make space for them to say it, and that we develop classroom communities where students can listen to one another and sound themselves out. This is a time for stances, not terminal irony.

Toad put the thin button in his pocket. He was very angry. He jumped up and down and screamed, “The whole world is covered in buttons, and not one of them is mine!”
An anguished Toad jumps up and down, beating his brow in desperate fury while Frog looks on, dismayed.

Basically, the books are interested in completely different things. In terms of plot, Huck will catch you up with the major events of Tom Sawyer (and then undo basically all of the consequences of that narrative) in the opening pages of the book.

Adaptation across media is brilliant for highlighting the kinds of choices made in and for the original media form. Film adaptations are wonderful for this and can make clear the shocking complexity of initiating human imagination via squiggly lines on paper.

Been thinking about this a lot: From 1995 to 2021, the ratio of students to *principals* in U.S. public schools decreased by 31.7%. The ratio fell even further for district-level admins: 34.8%. But for teachers, the decrease was only 11.5% & the ratio of students to librarians increased by 41.7%.

Odysseus cries one million times in this book. Just a fountain of tears. All the men are constantly crying every single day. I suspect Christopher Nolan is not up to the task! But want man tears, Christopher!!!
Picture of Emily Wilson translation, with Odysseus crying “Long-suffering Odysseus replied,
"I am no god. Why would you think such things?
1 am your father, that same man you mourn.
It is because of me these brutal men are hurting you so badly."
Then he kissed
his son and cried, tears pouring down his cheeks; he had been holding back till then. The boy did not yet trust it really was his father, and said,

The point of having students do peer review is not to fix the essay, it’s to give the students a concrete experience of delivering their ideas to an audience and being in community caring about their compositional choices.
