The dichotomy between ‘material’ and ‘cultural’ concerns is false. It misses the very fundamental point that rights are material concerns of a person. There is nothing more material than personal security, the right to a family existence, and expression without fear of retaliation.

All it can do is try to incentivise buying from that country’s producers by trying to reduce prices and barriers to entry. There will still be lots of incentives to maintain existing supply lines due to contracts, experience, etc

Rather, businesses and individuals in one country buy products from producers in another country. The US government cannot ‘buy’ potash or any other good from a different country for ‘cheaper’.

Everything always comes back to the 19th century for them. The concert of Europe was not what they claim it was - it was a coordinated effort at continent-wide conservatism and its failure to accommodate dynamic state structures and reform is exactly what led to its explosion in war in the 1870s

There is evidence that repeated Covid infections damage the frontal cortex which impacts emotional regulation and increases aggression. There is likely some link between this and how many individuals are behaving.

Alcohol bans should all stay in place until tariffs are fully lifted. The feds need to be stronger on this. Fiddling with supply management, starting to sell US alcohol in government stores, and refusing to think about energy are not the way to approach Trump.

Piketty's fundamental observation that r>g means rising wealth to income ratios remains incontrovertable because it's just accounting. Since Capital in the 21st Century we've had another decade of r >> g, so even if shares of wealth remain constant, wealth to income ratios have to rise.

What I think it actually shows is that criticism should add value: 1) criticism without offering an alternative policy is unhelpful 2) pretending to be ignorant of the issues is unserious (“what problem is this even solving”), especially when the cost of living crisis is so prominent

I also think the lack of distinction is a genuine failure of understanding of the difference. I even know of some prominent London lawyer-types who genuinely argue the UK parliament could revoke the independence of Canada and other colonies on a whim and that others would have to comply
