Australia has signed two mutual defence treaties, with Fiji and Papua New Guinea, over the past year—the first new alliances in the Asia-Pacific since the early days of the cold war. Our report, from Fiji's surprisingly chilly capital of Suva, ahead of this weekend's Pacific Island Forum in Palau:
Map of Australia's relationships with Pacific island countries, dividing them by allies, those negotiating an alliance, and those which have or are negotiating security agreements.

A raid outside Jakarta on 8 July turned up 74kg of gold and $20m in cash. Hours later, armed soldiers appeared outside Police HQ at 3am. What a corruption scandal tells us about competition between Indonesia's feuding security forces and President Prabowo's style of governance:

I love the complaints from northern Europeans about the conditions in Miami. As though it’s somehow inhumane to force Harry Kane and Erling Haaland to play in conditions in which more than a third of the world lives. Make them suffer. Good for the sport.

Even allies of Myanmar’s junta, like China and Thailand, have long found junta chief Min Aung Hlaing difficult to work with. They hoped that this week’s putative transition to civilian rule would dilute his power by forcing him to name a new armed forces commander.

The Washington Post's description of the bodycam video of his arrest last year, and the translation of Mr. Shah Alam's comments, is gutting. Remember, he was entirely blind in one eye and could only see three feet in the other, and he spoke virtually no English. He spent a year in jail for this.
Body-cam footage from the incident, reviewed by The Post, shows Shah Alam standing near the door of the shed holding two black poles. Officers shout at him and order him to drop the poles, reportedly curtain rods he’d fashioned into walking sticks. Shah Alam repeatedly says, “Sorry” while adjusting his grip on the poles and walking toward the officers. The officers continue to shout and warn that they will fire their Tasers. At one point, Shah Alam responds, “No,” then points the rods at the officers.

The officers both fire their Tasers and tackle him. Two officers report being bitten in the scuffle. After Shah Alam is restrained, the officers remark that they smell alcohol.

In the footage, Shah Alam can be heard speaking in Rohingya and Malay. He asks for God’s help and tries to explain to the uncomprehending officers that he lives nearby and was going to the store. He pleads with the officers not to throw away his phone.

The precedent here is obviously Panama, and while that was certainly illegal under international law, the US had a military base in the Canal Zone, there was a legitimate arrest warrant for Noriega, and there was at least the pretext of an American servicemember killed at a Panamanian checkpoint.
