Pretending this is about my hometown's success in specialty milling (Bob's Red Mill, Dave's Killer) and indie comics (Dark Horse), and not the Wisconsin city that spells it weird and has a baseball team that seems to have had a good night

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

*obviously this actual degree varies wildly and that matters too, but the general issue is that both the regime and its opponents are *both* cut off from this because it's mostly but not *completely* disempowered.

Completely agree with you here--one of the key things to understanding autocratic survival/collapse is that once autocracy is consolidated, public opinion matters, say, 90% less* while the regime gets 95% less information about what people think. How they manage that gap eventually seals their fate.

The limits of AI for authoritarian control (Yang, 2026, AJPS): "[C]itizens' strategic behavior under repression diminishes the amount of useful information in the data for training AI. The more repression there is, the less information exists in AI's training data, and the worse the AI performs."

I am absolutely incandescent thinking about this. We are choosing to honor the victims of murder by turning around and telling our children that evil is necessary. That it is inevitable. That their parents not only cannot stop it from happening, but instead should want them to become like *this.*

...long term, the only way to get past this challenge is to address the underlying nature of the transactional system of education that today's students have been inculcated into, and which our colleges and universities reinforce in terms of what they prioritize, school performance over learning.

There is so much that is beautiful in the world. Death is inevitable. Worshipping death is a choice. So is love.

To tell me, "I want your child to *see* death"...there is no way to twist that into a statement of protection, of care, of humanity. There will be times we cannot protect them. Yet to lust after that, to bring death to their door for its own sake, that is more. It is worshipping death. It. is. evil.
