It is also the reason to split HR (a dreadful term) into employment law & coaching. Regulation is needed to prevent abusive, discriminatory or unreasonable practices but no employer will ever get the best out of employees by developing and enforcing more rules. And guess what? This matters too!

If a scientist’s unconscious mind is working on a problem while they are asleep, gardening or walking, is that a ‘working’ day or a day’s leave? But if we work 24/7 as the ‘badge of honour’ fanatics suggest we ‘need to’ in order to survive what does that do to our creativity?

Every scientist and HR professional working with scientists needs to listen to this podcast from the amazing Hidden-Brain series. It’s the reason I’ve never signed out a day’s leave in my life and never will. But it’s also why I make sure I take time off anyway. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/h...

Not all grant rejections are equal. Some are more devastating than others. As a researcher, how do you keep going in those moments? The latest Science Without Anguish blog post discusses a topic we need to talk about much, much more! www.sciencewithoutanguish.com/blog/when-a-...

You know what? Better critical thinking (even if AI can deliver it, which I doubt) won’t help. Because critical thinking is not the limiting factor in grant applications. I used to believe it too.

Congratulations to Laura Carlton and Emma Wilson on these exciting findings, their first primary research articles as first and senior author respectively. Also thanks to Heba Morsy for in silico analysis of promoter sequences. We look forward to working constructively with reviewers.

Importance: These findings will support disease association studies link programmed axon death to specific human diseases. It is essential to move beyond the limitations of animal models and work directly in humans to understand where best to apply drugs blocking programmed axon death. 4/5

(2) Several rare variants lower hNMNAT2 expression. These are likely to increase risk of programmed axon death (3) One arose in an ALS patient in Project MinE (4) A common variant in the SARM1 promoter significantly increases expression, also potentially raising the risk of programmed axon death 3/5

SARM1 is a protein that drives axon degeneration. NMNAT2 suppresses its activity to keep axons healthy. Their expression levels are fundamentally important to axon health. Key points: (1) Identification of distinct regions that boost and suppress hNMNAT2 and hSARM1 expression 2/5

I reviewed my success rate for an ECR mentoring talk. Surprisingly I noticed the funding decisions on proposals made 15-25y ago bore little resemblance to which had the best plans with benefit of hindsight. A big lesson in what rejections mean and don’t mean. But they still hurt!

Coleman Lab @colemanlab.bsky.social · 19/11/2025
Thanks for sharing. The more we do that, the easier it gets for us all and the fewer great young scientists we lose from research because of total misunderstanding about what rejection does and doesn’t mean.

Science WITH Anguish? Grant rejection today. It never stops hurting no matter how successful or how many you dealt with before (this is no. 57). Thanks to my team for helping me handle it today. 😀 Tomorrow we go on. ECRs dealing with rejection: you are not alone! Hot tip: saying this helps me too!

When I was a postdoc people used to talk about the “brain drain” of our brightest scientists moving to the US. Now there is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the whole of Europe to put that into reverse…IF we fund science properly.
